Big Black Bear

So what has happened? Has this bear been shot? Hunted for? Great pics too by the way! It takes a big melon to reach the 20" mark so I'm curious to know what size of head he has/had and how big a hide he's sporting.

ROA's bear? That was last year, back around Mid May if you want to search through the threads.

He dumped it with a single round (286gr?) from his 9.3x64 Brenneke at about 25 yards I believe.

It squared 6'7". I love the color of the muzzle.

I dare say with the punch that round has that it piled up pretty quick.

I'll have to go back and have a look at that thread.

...the odds are you'll get mostly small bears and the worst thing is stupid sow with cubs that come in on your bait, cuz then it can get nasty... ..

A friend from Hudson Bay has a video he shot from his tree stand. He was taping a couple cubs/yearlings when something spooked them. The cubs come straight for the tree his stand is in, and shoot up it. You can see two black streaks going past the video camera. One cub stayed above him, the second cub came down the tree and started swatting at my friend from the oposite side of the tree. He didn't want to shoot the one swatting at him for fear the other would freak out and attack. He didn't want to shoot the one above him for fear the damn thing would fall into the tree stand with him. Generally a poor position to be in. After a few minutes of snarling, the cub swatting at him decides to leave and the second cub came scuttling down the tree, past the stand and gone.

Funny how the guys that are the first to chastise someone else about using a different tool or method, are usually also the first to cry hypocrite on everyone else. If you can't understand that it's less the tool than your competency with it, then you have no business judging anyone else. The "Holier than thou", "I set the moral standards" attitude is tiring.

There are reasons for approaching a hunting situation differently, the simplest ones being location, availability of animals and skill of the hunter. If a guy wants to bait, and finds success that way, then let him. He's not making you bait too.

i live in bc and usually find my bears on side hills feeding. sometimes long shots sometimes up close. i don't have a problem baiting as you can be sure of the size. i have been the resipiant of bear shrinkage. the bear on a steep hill that appears much larger than it is. its all hunting and the method should not matter. a clean ethical kill is the important thing. i'm more concered with guys wanting to use 223 and such than the actual method. hunting is not catch and release. animals should be harvested in a humain way. use enough gun to ensure the job gets done.

Wow. I cannot believe the crap slinging. If a person heads out onto unfenced land and legally shoots a wild big game animal, that is hunting, plan and simple. Supercub pretty much smashed that argument. And I read the SKS BS  a while back and cannot understand why a person would put that story on the board:puke:. I could fly a plane with my ass if I wanted to, doesn't make it a good idea:rolleyes:.
And in reply to another batch of ignorant statments, I have killed 62 big game animals. Two of those kills were with 'sharp sticks', and they were two of my quickest kills ever. They ran 30yds or less before expiring.Razor sharp blades in the lungs or heart 1.25" in diameter will kill just as quickly as a 0.458 blunt through the same area.
That bear is massive and the boys have put in the time and effort. I hope it was tagged, I'd like to see a guy sitting by it with a long bow and feathered, cedar arrows. Ta' hell with the rest of ya.:D

Nice bear.

That's your average garbage dump bear up this way. I had 2 that size "mom and pop" with their cubs come 4 inches from the side of my truck, I could have reached out an touched em.

It was a very cool experience. They all started coming out as the sun was almost down. A fellow I know that works there took us in after hours. Amazing.

Mind you, ya don't want to shoot one of those stinky buggers ;)

Nice pics, and nice hunting spot!

Well, after reading through like the longest postings of all time, I would just like to know this. How does one spot and stalk a bear? What is the most effective way to do it? Does it mean driving around looking for bears on loggin roads and stopping at clear cuts? Is that fair chase? Fair to me would seem like, mono y mono with your bare fists, and his bear hands. I would like to do them both still though, and plan to do a Drive and Stalk this spring. Any tips from anyone who has done this before will help.

I have mixed feelings about baiting animals. That's not really hunting, it's luring and shooting from the safety of your trailer, or cabin, or what have you.

Also, if you're going to take an animal, do it with a reliable tool. I have a few friends who hunt with bows and more often then not, they just wound the animals, especially when they use recurves.

Not to pick on you, just telling you how your post makes me feel. Nice looking bear though. Give him a fair fighting chance and uf you (your friend)take him down, do it fast and painless. Use a good rifle, not a sharpened stick that might or might not kill it.

WTF???:confused:Did you get lost in cyberspace somewhere between the PETA website and dumfux.com?

Obviously you know almost zero about hunting in general, even less about bear baiting, and haven't a clue about bowhunting? As for "how it makes you feel"......??Maybe you're therapist cares?

now run along child, and be careful you don't put your eye out with you're Red Rider.

Welcome to 2008! If you weren't from Socialist New Brunswick I might care to respond to your insults. Maybe you can use all that anger to do something about the tyranny you people live under.

Well,

I guess everyone is entitled to an opinion, but this site tries to promote the sports of shooting and hunting.

Your comments condem baiting as well as bow hunting which are both perfectly legal method of hunting.

Comments like that would steer some to question your wisdom of the sport.

If it doesn't fit into your wallet of ethics that is just fine, but the minute you judge anothers legal methods is when people start to get a tad upset.

If hunting froo\m a bait is not your bag of tricks then so be it, but I would suggest trying it and do it with kids. It's a great way to introduce them to shooting big game from a safe perch.

For what its worth, do your comments also apply to setting out decoys for gesse?
