Big Bore (.375 and up) Bolt Action Rifle ####

Beautiful pictures Brybenn, Thanks for sharing with us.
You make mention of a 458X2", I have a Ruger # 1 in 450 / 348 Ackley Imp. and it seriously chases my 458 WM.
It has lots of punch at both ends, case life after fireforming is excellent and it will easily handle any bullet weight cast or jacketed up to and including 600 gr.

Brybenn is interested in the 458 SOCOM, I'm the one that would love a 458x2". I've never heard of a 450/348AI but it makes a lot of sense. I only wanted to go the 458x2" route because I wanted a short bolt action. Would love to see a picture of that round if you have any.

Really enjoyed reading through this thread, some beautiful rifles gents. I own a few big bores, but only have pics of the one off hand, only because I finally used it the other day. It's probably one of the smallest of the .375's out there I'd think. 9.5x57 mannlicher.

Superbrad yes t is the baikal mp221 in 45/70. I love it. It was regulated with rem factory 405 gr loads. When I got it with factory loads it grouped 2 shots from each barrel into a 2" cluster at 75 yards. My hand loads are silver cast 405 gr flat nose hard cast at 1600-1650 fps. Both barrels shoot one hold groups at 50 yards but there's 2" height difference now so I'm right on at 50 with the front trigger and right on at 125 with the back. I use it for bear baiting and thick bush. I've never had to shoot past 20 yards with it. I own a baikal ij58 12 ga and they swing the same. The triggers are a little stiff but i've never noticed when shooting bears. I haven't used the hard cast bullets on game other than grouse but the rem bulk 405 gr jacketed soft nose has worked great. Even in my 458 wm. My baikal wears a 2.5x20 scope in utg one piece air gun mount. It uses the stop screw in the rib to. I've hit 2000 fps with it and it's never moved. I've shot over 700 rounds with no issues. The jack screw is very precise but it's in cm and only does side to side. It's light short and gives you the feeling that a real sxs would without the fear of dinging up $10-15 000.

As for the 458-2" I have wanted one but I think the socom would be just as good in a bolt gun and can be properly head stamped brass.
I've switched to 400 gr pp woodlieghs for my 458 wm at 2450 fps so hopefully this August I can try them on a bear

Beautiful pictures, Thanks for sharing with us.
Do you handload for the 9.5 and if so could you give us the load details that took that fine bear ?

Thank you Kev. The load I use is 47 grains of imr 3031, and a 220 grain hornady bullet. The brass is 8mm necked up to 9.5. In the 18 years of owning this rifle, that bear was my first harvest with it, a few days ago :). A hand down from my passed grandad.

Now I LIKE that a lot. Funky departure from the usual.

Thanks for the info, I just sold the takedown version of your Mannlicher Schoenauer and never did shoot it because I had no ammunition and too many other toys.
I'm currently playing with a Mauser in 375 / 06 Imp. that would be a bit similar for performance.

^beautiful rifle Kevan

Too bad you let the MS go; that's the second rifle of yours I should have moved on quicker.

What type of wood is the fore-end cap on that one?

Man..... All of these big bores and messing around with my "new to me" 375 H&H has me hankering for more..... There is a beautiful 450-400 NE Ruger #1 on the EE right now........ Hmmmmm

I own a parker hale safari in the 375H&H. I want to sell it because I want a 25-06. I have a 35 WHELEN in a RUGER m77 also and really like that rifle so I don't need the 375H&H.

Now that there is a beautiful piece Kevan, really like that stock. My grandad was a gunsmith / stock builder, who loved big bores. I remember as a kid, he had built a 338-375 for an Africa hunt, he used a h&h case, and cut it down a little. It was a pretty cool looking cartridge. He loved his Mauser's, and pre 64's. Here is a couple more that got handed to me.
The one with the boot is a pre 64 model 70, 375 h&h, it was my grandmas hunting rifle. Grandad built the stock, she had shorter arms, so I use a boot on it so that it fits better. I recently re finished the stock, that one is my guiding rifle.
The other is a 458 wm, another he built for an African hunt, it's to bad the airlines had misplaced it tho, he never did get to use it in Africa. The stock is a rosewood, the action an old Mauser, it had a old steel butt plate, I'm in the middle of fitting a pad on it. I. Only ever pulled the trigger on it twice, such a nice rifle, but man I need some meat on my shoulders lol.
