big bore and felt recoil

As for big VS little and felt recoil, pish tosh. For every person who says lil folks absorb it well by 'rolling' with the recoil, you will find one who says bigger is better. 6 of one, 1/2 a dozen of another.

Now for those who actually shoot, rather than discuss it on the net, its not 6 of one half dozen of another. I have a video Dosing I can send you that I shot a few years ago. Ever seen a little kid fire 3 boxes of 3 inch 1500fps steel without a bruise (out of a 14 inch 870). I cant even do that without a bit of pink on my shoulder. It clearly shows why he doesnt bruise vs others shootign techniques.

I've seen it time and time again, and its not pish pash. NOw sit the kid prone, or from the bench, and its a different story...

Lots of interesting info in this thread. One that hasn't been mentioned is that most shooting benches are poorly designed--the topis too low for the seat. This forces you to lean into the rifle and makes the felt recoil worse.

A proper bench set up makes it much more pleasant to shoot the big boomers. Most recoil issues can be traced to poor stock fit and too little rifle weight. Ruger No 1's in .375 H + H and the Whitworth express rifles in .375 and .458 mag are the most unpleasant rifles to shoot in my experience for those reasons.

I'm with ya there. That's the only H and H that I've shot and it doesn't agree with me.

Well for the sake of this discussion lets limit it to the unreal world of the net
I'll pass on the video, but thanks for the kindly offer. And to that single story, but I am sure you and others have more, I will counter with what I have seen. I have seen tiny little guys, women and kids handle 338s and even bigger, and come away unphased. I have seen little guys, women and kids try 303s, or 338s and come away wincing with brusies. Likewise for big guys. Personally I preffer shooting from a bench, and I can even counter your contention that sitting or prone has an equally rock solid statistical effect. I can sit at a bench and drive 300 and 338WM (and bigger) down range, and come away with nery a bruise, I have seen other big guys wincing after a few shots. I have likewise seen guys less than half my size go shot for shot with me. And yet I can pick up a 12ga that is an awkward fit and come away with bruising to my upper bicep. As I said, for every story someone has of one side you can find someone with one on the other. If you want to commission a scientific study, and apply to Research Canada for a grant, get some statistics behind it, then I will treat it as more than 'he said, she said'.
Till then, as I say, I have seen it all over the place. My only odd observation is that people who don't 'know its supposeda hurt' don't seem to whimper as much. But hey, maybe thats just a statistical annomaly?

Dosing, if you are trying to say that shooting prone does not give more felt recoil than for example off hand, well, there no other way of saying it. You are full of $hit!
Try it yourself, Oh one who always shoots from a bench. Lets do it with a hard kicking rifle with a steel butt plate just to be sure it leaves a nice mark.

I am considering a big bore gun. I like the statistics on the 378 but have some concern about recoil. Anyone have experience with the big bore rifles and willing to provide some guidance?

I thought you wanted a bigbore?

Yeah, I'd love to see him shoot a half dozen of those 500's you rolled up for the guide gun Prone. :D :D :D I've made a few shooters hurt off the bench, nevermind prone. A bit high= broken collarbone:D
I remember A particular AR15 shooter who had fired a 12 guage shotgun a bunch of times firing your 45-70 with those loads. One shot was all he needed with that heavy levergun, and the steel butt to give up shooting "big guns" for good:eek: and that was offhand:D

But as Im saying Dosing, watch what the people that arent hurting are doing different from the people that do hurt. you'll see the difference they're movement makes in absorbing recoil vs a person who tries to stand up to it. Pay attention closely, you might learn something from a non or novice shooter. Sometimes its pretty humbling;).

I definately find it a heck of alot easier to shoot my 375 standing than from the bench.I weigh about 260 and I tend to absorb a fair bit of the recoil.Shooters at the range who have never shot a gun as big as my 375 I get them to shoot it standing!!!You get whalloped bad hunkered down behind that on the bench and it can smart, and ruin people with a flinch.Much better to be comfortable when you pull the trigger!.

Big guns take practice, I'd never let an inexperienced shooter try the 378 or full power Rigby. Light people will roll with the gun more no question. I don't think most here have a grasp of what big bullets and 110-120 grs of powder can do. If you think a 300 WM kicks at all forget the 378 and up.To hold the gun so that it can't hurt you and still have the trigger control to shoot
good groups can only be done with practice, and a good fitting stock.

Amph. I agree that the 378 is not a big bore it just kicks like one.

I know while siteing in my 54cal thompson with 100 grains Bp,while holding tight to shoulder and with strong cheek wield(conicul bullets)I could put them where I wanted at 100 yards!

But after about about 15 rounds my right cheekand face looked like I had been in a fist fistfight with George Foreman!!!

So yes if you pull it in tight and cheek weild it and do your part the round will do it's part!

Now just how many times you will have to do this excercise to get your game,is up to you!!

Use what you can handle for what you need it for!

I would say BIG GAME might need some big pain!!

Course you can spend more money to lessen the pain!

You shoot a 4-bore and you will feel it(but so will the game)just use what you will need(in the enviroment)that you hunt!

And carry a big bore back-up-pistol!!!

Bob
