Big Bore Appreciation Thread

4570 sxs and a 458wm on an interarms mk x with a 26.5" barrel.
Both have taken black bear and grouse. Haven't made it to Africa yet but will someday
Love the 458wm and also the 4570. I'll likely pick up a single shot to play with in 4570 as my sxs is regulated for the 405gr load
Next favorite would be a 416 taylor of which I will eventually get around to having built if I'd stop buying other things like another mastif puppy

I'll post a quick reply as I'm between work, but oh boy do I like these threads!

1. What big bores do you own?

I own a "mid bore" Sauer 90 in 9.3x64 Brenneke, a Ralf Martini-built Santa-Barbara Mauser 98 in 416 Ruger, and a Steve Holborn-built Ruger RSM in 505 Gibbs.

2. Which are your favourite?

I very much like the 416 Ruger, but if I could only keep one, it would be the Ruger in 505 for the sheer novelty and not leaving myself wanting more for a big bore. The Ruger is also a real working gun --- it's got some "character" marks.

3. Which do you plan on adding to your collection?

I had no plan when I picked up any of my rifles; they were "luck of the moment" impulse purchases as I knew I'd not have the funds (and quite frankly the inclination) to have them built or sourced for myself. That's not to say I don't really like owning them, it's just that of my priorities for purchase, they are not at the top of my list.

4. Do you hunt Canadian game with them?

Not yet, but that's simply because I haven't had an opportunity to use them in a hunt where they might make sense, and I don't get out hunting enough to want to be experimental and try something unusual for our small Island blacktail.

5. Any African Safari's under your belt or planned for the future?

None at the moment, but I did lend out the Ruger 505 to our CGN member Ardent for IIRC an elephant or rhino hunt that he'd planned, but unfortunately fell through.

6. What's the cheapest you can get your ammo costs down to with reloading? (Yikes at those retail prices).

I'm lucky in that I bought 6 boxes of factory 416 Ruger on closeout for about $1.50/round and picked up quite a few factory rounds of 505 Gibbs for ~ $4/piece. I have all the dies and brass and moulds to reload my own for a reasonable cost, but again, haven't had the need yet.

I posted about my rifles in this thread: https://www.canadiangunnutz.com/for...amily-portrait?highlight=Bore+Family+Portrait

... but will re-show the pictures here because who doesn't like pictures of rifles?

Hi all,

I was doing a safe cleaning/inspection today, and thought I'd post up some pictures of three rifles that I feel very fortunate to own. I've been lucky over the years to find some interesting and beautiful custom rifles on the used market that I would have never been able to entertain purchasing at bespoke prices. I'm also a collector and reloader, so I have troubles turning down a reason for getting into yet another cartridge.

From left-to-right is a Sauer 90 in 9.3x64 Brenneke, which I believe was built by Ed LaPour in Washington State, a Santa Barbara Mauser 98 in 416 Ruger built by Martini and Hagn in BC, and a Ruger Safari Magnum in 505 Gibbs built by Steve Holborn in Ontario. The 9.3x64 Brenneke came with a Zeiss 1-4x20 scope in Warne QD mounts and the 416 Ruger came with 2-7x32 Kahles scope in Recknagel pivot mounts.

There are inlayed silver markers on the 9.3x64 Brenneke's rear sight leaves and the Ruger 416 has has some very tasteful (IMO) engraving and timed screws. The 505 Gibbs has an extended magazine and is a working rifle, but it's got character!

I hope you enjoy the pictures!

That's an epic threesome you have there, I especially like the Ruger RSM. I wish Ruger would revive that rifle with the classic safari cartridges but that doesn't seem to be their focus anymore.

I've read that although the recoil on the .505 is quite "stout", it's more of a push and not quite as sharp as some of the .416's/.458s.

I'm also really intrqieud by the .416 Ruger round, it seems to perform just as well as the magnum length Rigby in a more compact, and affordable package. I just wish Ruger would pump out some more 416 Guide Guns. I reached out to the Ruger distributer and was informed they they have no forseeable production of their .416 rifles.

Beautiful rifles Stickhunter!
How does a guy follow that????

The big ones in my collection:
Ruger guide in 375 Ruger
Winchester 1895 in 405 Winchester (Let go of a CZ550 in 416 Rigby for it)
Marlin 1895G in 45-70
Pedersoli 1874 Sharps in 45-70
Ruger No.1-H in 458 Winchester Mag
Rossi 92 in 454 Casull (Does this one even count?)

Nice collection. How long ago did you pick up the guide gun? I can't find any in stock chambered in 375/416 these days. Do you regret selling the .416 or does the 375 basically cover you on everything you used the 416 for?

My largest caliber was 45-70 and I also had a few 375 hh. I ended up selling them off and currently loving my Winchester .416 rem mag. Currently shooting 300gr tsx at 2800 and 400gr at 2450. I really enjoy shooting the 416 in the safari express. Thstock really does a great job absorbing recoil.

Have you taken any game with the .416? I like that the RemMag ammo costs about half that of the Rigby. Glad the stock on those Model 70's are great for absorbing recoil, mine arrives today.

I can’t claim membership; only a 375 H&H in the safe. I do want a big bore, just cannot justify the full price. When one comes along with dies and maybe some brass for a good price I may succumb to temptation.

Nothing wrong with 375 H&H, i view it as the gateway drug into the Big Bores. It's definately what got me going down this path. Without reloading one of the .416's (RemMag/Ruger) would be the most "affordable" step up from the 375s.

Just a 375 Ruger right now but have owned many. Used a 416 Rigby as my only rifle huntng for six years. Shot a lot with it. Elk Moose deer. I shot a deer with a 460wby. Killed it. Haha. Wish I still had my 510 Wells and want to own a 416Wby. My most interesting big bore was my 404 Jeffery. My most fun was the 460wby. Everyone who shot it walked away giggling.

Looks like you've owned a bit of everything. The .404 is supposedly a real sweet spot.

How did your 460 compare in felt recoil to the 416 Rigby? Would it be punishing to go through a box of that stuff? Aside from the wallet as it looks like a box of 20 was around $300.

3 - 9.3x62s, 2 Huskys and a Vanguard
375 Ruger in a vanguard
416 Ruger in a Vanguard
450BM Gunsite Scout
45-70 CVA Scout

I think these are all medium bore, I don't see a true big bore in my future.

I got the guide gun off the EE here last summer. I do not regret selling the 416 Rigby, It was a beautiful rifle in an amazing round, but it did not fit me at all, way too long LOP. I could not bring myself to cut the stock, (Yet I had absolutely no issue shortening the Ruger No.1, lol.) I sold it to fund the purchase of the 1895 in 405, which is more the direction of interest I have at this time as far as rifles go. I'm happy with the switch. In a perfect world I would have kept the 416 too, but couldn't financially swing that at the time.

As to the 375, a friend has one in 416, and I don't know what it is about that rifle, but when I shouldered that rifle it just felt RIGHT. After using his a bit I knew I needed one. Last summer one popped up on the EE, so I grabbed it, chambered in 375. I'm actually happy it was in 375 as I have the other big bores, but I didn't really have anything in a medium bore, and I think it will be more versatile than the 416, in this area of the world.

Regarding the Ruger no.1 in 458, I really enjoy shooting that rifle, and it is accurate! I much preferred the 458 WM to the 416 Rigby, shootability wise, but that boiled down to rifle fit.

As to optics,
CZ550 in 416 had a Leupold vari-x III 1.75-6x36
Ruger No.1 in 458 wears a VX3 1.5-5x20
Ruger guide in 375 has a VX2 3-9x40

Couple things. Firstly, many buy big boomers, most shoot them very infrequently. Recoil and ammo cost. My basic point, don't be afraid to buy used, it is unlikely in the extreme that it's "worn out".

At $8-10+/shot, most big bores are reloader calibers. Big bore projectiles, currently, are very expensive, say 》.308. My stash of reloading for me means I feel today's component justinflation only at restock.

The only commonly mentioned, marginal big bore, in this thread that is realistic in factory ammo is the 45-70. Even so, pre craziness, the cheapest was $55-70 / box.

All fair points. I've been meaning to start reloading for a few years now, these big bore cartridges just gave me the extra push to do so. I just bought 3 boxes of .458 at approximately $600 (ouch). Looks like I'll be saving all that brass to reload.

In my experience reloading is the way to go and this way if you want to shoot the gun a fair amount lead bullets can be used
And then some guns reloading and lead are the only way to go, this is my largest rifle, a double 8 bore for 3 1/2 inch cases, most shooting i have done with this has been with round balls in plastic cases with 220 grains of 3F powder
For comparison a Ruger #1 in 416 Rigby in the one picture and the last picture shows a 416, 375 H&H and a empty 8 bore case

A custom .458 WM that my grandad built in the 80’s for a Cape buffalo hunt. I inherited it in ‘98, shot 2 rounds from it and it’s been in the safe ever since. If I ever get around to replacing the steel butt plate with a recoil pad, I may try it again.

1. What big bores do you own? Cross-over Calibre 9.3 x 62. Mine is a Husquevarna built with a 98 mauser action.

2. Which are your favourite? I like all classic rifles with classic calibres.

3. Which do you plan on adding to your collection? None at present.

4. Do you hunt Canadian game with them? If I was younger I would.

5. Any African Safari's under your belt or planned for the future? No.

6. What's the cheapest you can get your ammo costs down to with reloading? (Yikes at those retail prices). Using new brass and primers, powder and projectiles at today's prices, not a lot less than new ammo; I am starting to reform 30-06 brass, so hope to se savings there. I'd say about $4.00 each with new brass, about $3.00 each with with homemade brass. New varries from $70-$120 for factory ammo.

That is a beautiful rifle, especially given where it came from!
I have never seen a rear peep mounted like that before...
