416 Remington magnum vs 458 win mag for Bison, Grizzly hunting.
Overkill maybe but why not.
Which one and why?

458 Probably makes the most sense. It's good enough for Phil Shoemaker to carry in Alaska so it should work fine for you. I love the 416s but the magnum-length action makes for a heavier rifle than most want to carry through the alders.

The .416 is more useful in nearly every scenario .
I got tired of sourcing weird calibre bullets pretty quickly so it's .458 for me,
and 9.3 and .411.

Neither. Not a fan of either of them. 375H&H if shooting factory ammo as it is readily available, 404 Jeffery if you reload (9.3x62 can be thrown in there as well). If those are the only two you are considering then the 458 and rechamber to 458 Lott :)

I have owned, shot and hunted with the 416 Rem, and would recommend it in a heartbeat,,the extra 3/16" in action length is only noticeable in hunting magazine stories,,so not real in fact,,,however the 416 will drive a 300gr bullet at 2900fps for a flat shooting 450 yard rifle,,and a 400gr at 2500fps,,which will flatten anything, anywhere,,,great cartridge,,I have shot several moose with this round and countless black bears,,not one animal ever took more than one step after the shot

I'm trying to talk myself into the 458 win mag.
One of my local guns stores has a Winchester safari express sitting there in 458....if it was 416rm I would have brought it home yesterday....no 416rm in canada at the distributor level by the sounds of it to order.
Wondering if I'll be happy with the 458 when I really wanted the 416.

Get a sxs comparison pic of the two cartridges and see if that helps you decide ;)
What kinda ammo support does your local gun store carry?
I'm sure the boys on fraser Street would have a lifetime supply of what you may need for either round once you fired enough factory for spare brass that is,lol.
Pictures from when you brought it home too !

I love my 458 wm
Cast and trail boss its a giant pellet gun for small game
300 gr Hornady hollow points for plinking
405 gr fnsp bulk for deer
Woodliegh 400 pp for reaching out. Zero at 100 I'm 6" at just over 200 yards
500 grs for big stuff
I shoot the woodlieghs 400 pp at 2450 fps. 72 grs H4895. 26.5" barrel
I also have a 45/70 and am thinking 458 2" or 458 socom
It's a great bullet diameter

My choice for decades was the 458 for several reasons.
Mine would shoot any cast bullet that my 45-70s used and with very good accuracy.
It is a beautiful cartridge in dense timber for Moose and has surprisingly good reach for Elk with very little meat damage.
And it has awesome stopping power..

I have a 416 Rem. Mag., 416 Ruger, 458 Win. Mag. and 458 Lott. The 416's have a bit better range than the 458's. All are excellent heavy game stompers.

458 and load it with 350gr X @2600 or a 400gr at 2400 and you have a great big bore with enough reach for most game

I very much liked the .416 Rigby, and carried one for some time, but when forced to replace it, initially chose a .458, then got a .375 Ultra. I don't consider any "under .40" a big bore. If I revisited the .416, I believe I'd go the wildcat route, and neck up the .375 Ultra to .416; I've been tempted to upgrade my M-70 to a .458 Ultra. Ultra-mag brass is less expensive and easier to acquire than the Rigby or Weatherby versions, and isn't far behind in performance.

416 Taylor is well balance and will toss a350gr@2550-2600fps
Most would likely go with the 416 ruger now over the Taylor though

My choice since 1974 has been the .458 Win because of how versatile the cartridge is for me with both jacketed and cast loads. I'm on my 5th. one now and she's a peech. I'd have a .416 Ruger meself over the other 416's as I don't need the extra power & weight for anything I'd poke with it.

I've always thought the .416 Taylor would be nice........Harold

I just had a 416 Taylor built - WBee Vanguard action - Bob Jury 22.5 " SS #5 barrel -Timney trigger - B&C Alum bed block stock - Night Force Pic Base - Gotta get some rings yet and mount up the LEO VX111 1.75-6 x scope then get it out shooting and hunting ! :) RJ

More bullet choices for the 458's including 300gr HP for inexpensive plinking...

With a bullet that big please define "cheap" for this novice?

458 Hornady 300gr HP bullets were about 60 cents each when I picked up a supply a while ago (now about 80 cents each). Compared to 2 to 3x that price for other 458 bullets.
