Just finished skinning a large buck i got on the home quarter....this is the opening day and was sitting out only 10 mins. after supper. I was using a TC Omega Z5 with 2.5-10 Bush. 4200, set on 10 power for the shot of about 225yds. I used the yellow TC sabot with a pure lead 350gr. Gould Hollow point, sized to .452". Deer dropped on the spot as the bullet went right through the heart and some other internals but did not exit, a huge mess inside but very little meat loss. Tomorrow in the day light I will try and find the bullet.

Bennie,I'm shocked that you didn't use a 45-70 of some kind..............

Can't use the big stuff for a month or so, muzzleloaders only....probably just as well, last year I tore up a buck pretty bad with the 50/90 sharps. I hit him in the south end as he was headed north, nothing left of the hind end to eat. I do make every effort to make a clean kill so that the animal doesn't suffer, and have never had to trail anything I've shot, 50/90s are like that.

I knew there was a reason.........

Blargon is right it is a modern setup for me but, i bought it to test cast bullets(heavy hammer type) in modern sabots, using 777, it had to be a similar set-up to what the average Joe would be using, except for the WFN,LFN, and Hollow pt. bullets.

So what was the outcome of the test? Are you making bullets suitable for sabots?

Curious what velocity you were shooting Ben.....my experience with pure lead bullets in sabots going more than 1,800 or so has been anything but good. Seems the bullets obturate too much under higher pressures causing major petal failure of sabots.

Most of the big bullets are actually going under 1800fps, using only 2 pellets of 777. The testing beforehand mirrors alot of testing i have done with the 45/70 and the 50/90 Sharps, as in some cases I am using the same bullets in the in-line .50. The 30-1 mix works great with the 300gr. WFN and the 350gr. Hollow pt., accuracy at 100 yds. is top notch. The hollow pt. may expand too much for some, but broadside hits cause animals to get sick and die immediately. These won't interest the "jacketed, plastic tip, commercial"crowd but for pure power and knockdown, flatpoints from 300gr. to 480gr. and the hollowpts. always work for me.

That is interesting....the weak link in using pure lead in muzzleloaders is the sabot. While obturation works well when the bullet is actually in contact with the lands of the rifling, is an entirely different scenario when you encase it in plastic. Just curious why you are going the sabot route and not a full bore conical? It seems that the pure lead route has been tried and failed a number of times already. There's no doubt that they work sub 1,800 but most guys shooting in-lines and sabots also want speed and with the inconsistency in the plastics in sabots and the physics of pushing a pure lead bullet with high pressures, it is a recipie for failure. Nothing against big pure lead bullets as they work extremely well.......just not when wrapped in plastic and pushed with high pressures.
