Just kidding.

Heheheheheheh, funny, not the answer he was looking for, but funny none the less.

He could be an old buck and just a little bit smarter than you (no offense). More than one old buck has handed me a piece of humble pie.

It doesn't take much to spook a mature buck and he could have gone nocturnal but it's hard to say unless you know the exact amount of activity on that field. Even then, the rut can throw a wrench into all the research you do. Anything horny is unpredictable.

I like to drag a scent pouch behind my boot just incase the wind changes.

Many dominant Whitetail bucks will go nocturnal and into heavy cover for the rut... the mature Does all know where his bedroom is. And if they don't they will just follow the scrape lines until they do... it is very hard to catch one of these older bucks out in the open

For him to have lived this long, he must be a good learner... After seeing a change of habits in the human presence in HIS territory and hearing a few gun shots afar, he knows to lay low in heavy cover. He will definitly be nocturnal and hang around anywhere it seems impossible to cover the ground. He likes to set up as to smell, hear and see you coming so he has lots of time to dee dee the F... out of Dodge. :) Sometimes it takes a few years to catch up to an old buck like that...but that only makes victory sweeter

Toomer and I went back to the duck ponds for a hunt with the kids tonight... it is very dry this year and we parked the truck about 100 feet from the blind.
We walked in talking and laughing and got the two little ones situtated and I walked back to the truck to get my gear.
Toomer took a walk around the pond to see if he could jump a woody. I heard a shout and turned to see a big Buck tearing off... he was laying in the cattails right in between the blind and the truck and we had both walked past him twice
Toomer said he was one step from stepping on him when he jumped up... I am sure that Buck would have layed there the whole time we were hunting and never moved if he hadn't got stepped on
