The 45/70 is a short range gun. Try takin sometyhing past 200 yrds. It might have the power, but the speed and weight of the bullet work against it at long distances. It drops way too much because of the weight and it slows down too much, also because of the weight. If you want go right ahead and use it. But it would be stupid too, especially with calibers like .300WM or 30-06.

the original post in this thread is absolutely ridiculous.
there are completely different requirements for a typical big game hunting rifle, and a wildlife defense firearm that will be used for quick shots at close ranges. just because you cant hunt Moose at 250 yards with your 12 gauge smoothbore pump loaded with Brennekes doesnt mean it is ineffective as a wilflife defense gun :rolleyes:

Wow. I am with sealhunter on this one. What a gem of a post.
Ok, in the spirit of the initial thread here we go.....
First off if weight slows the bullet down too much to make a cartridge effective past 200 yds, then why in the world is the oh, I don know, 50 BMG so stinking popular for shooting thinks past 1000m? Or the 408 Cheytac, or the 338 Lapua. Heck the 750gr AMAX for the 50 BMG is 50% heavier than the 500gr bullet that is the "demise" of the 45-70! Should hit dirt by 100yds for sure.
That and the fact that hunters shot the buffalo into near extinction with the 45-70, 45-90, 40-60, 45-75 etc, at awful long range kind of tells you the drawing board is waiting for your newest conclusion.
Weight in a projectile is actually a good thing. It creates a thing people like to call momentum. And the momentum wants to keep moving forward, only inhibited by friction, which is caused by bullet shape. Which is why people who want bullets to fly a long way use pointy ones, instead of flat ones, because pointy bullets have less resistance (the thingy caused by friction).
I also happen to know of a few folks that can drop animals farther away with their 45-70 Rolling Blocks and Highwalls than I can with my 6.5's and 7mm's. And that is a very long way.
I would say with logic like that quoted above, your stupid for shooting your 300's and 30-06 when you can use a 264 or a 280 :rolleyes:

Personally I don't shoot slugs but I have rung steel at 700 yards with my 45-70's.

Sounds like people really should buy a 12ga though and forget about dropping a couple grand on a .50BMG. LOL
 
WHy am I not surprised that the thread starter, "303 Carbine" has been banned since starting this thread?:p

In BC the biggest animal you can hunt with a shotgun and any slug is a black bear. No moose, elk, caribou, grizzly....
