Big Game Calibers - Math vs Experiences?

exactly, just guessing, but looks like it held together, so it wasn't lacking on sd, it would appear it was lacking on impact velocity, assuming not some weird angle shot that never was in line with vitals to begin with, somebody sending it with 5-6' of Kentucky hold over was my deduction also ;) either way, one part of the necessary formula wasn't present, looks like impact velocity

Hard to tell from the angle of that pic, but it seems to me that there is a lot of that bullet missing; don't really think it held together. In fact, if it weren't for the fact that nobody uses them anymore , I would almost guess that bullet was an old Nosler Partition that completely lost the forward portion of the core and had the jacket peel way back to the rear core.

But I don't try to reverse-engineer a bullet's course through life after it is dug out of an animal years later...and I'm forced to admit that I have used a lot of Partitions over the years, still have a bunch left and still intend to utilize them. Embarrassing, actually...:)

Nope, jacket and core seperated.

I doubt would happen if the velocity was on the slow side , for sure. Could be the wrong construction of bullet was used ?
So much guessing as we don't have input from the person who shot the danged thing!
It is a 6mm bullet correct?

They're probably still wondering how they missed a sure shot. Most shots in the area that I got that buck are 25 -100 yards, I shot my first buck not far from there with 00 Buckshot at 12 yards.

It's the jacket from a cup and core 6mm bullet.

I've also seen light and fast lack penetration where the heavy would have been a better option. My hunting partner switched to 6.5 with 120gr GMX at 2850 fps, and shot a moose broad side, the moose also took shots from another hunter to put it down. The 6.5 bullet was recovered, bullet expanded well but lacked the penetration that we were used to. Up until then his main gun was a Ruger #1 in 7x57 shooting 175gr at 2600 fps. That rifle and load took everything for 30+ years from deer, bear, moose, to elk with ease. Never had a hiccup with that combination until the switch.

I look at your experience (that particular one) and how I see it I wouldn't necessarily blame fast and light. Wouldn't necessarily be looking at the difference between 6.5 and 7mm either. I'd be looking more toward mono versus cup and core. Up to a couple hundred yards I'd rather shoot a moose with a muzzleloader than a mono.
