Well I dont think we have a cooking section so I thought this kinda falls under hunting as we have to cook what we hunt. Were thinking of buying one, anyone used one first hand???

I have one.
The thing is the cats ass.

Good quality, well worth the money as it will be around for a lifetime.

The only bad points I can come up with are that the bolts will rust on you and the lid gasket will wear out quickly.
You should go on over to the egghead forum and cruise around. You will learn lots.

There is so much stuff available aftermarket for them!
For instance when my lid gasket wore out, I upgraded to a spun ceramic boiler gasket. Much better.

I've got one, love it. I've had it three+ years and use it a few times a week. Haven't had any bolt rust issues or needed to replace a gasket. I love to BBQ and this machine is worth every penny. If you're close by you can come for a tour. Once you have one you'll wonder how you ever got by without one!

If you got $1,000 to spend on a smoker, don't get the big green egg. They require constant supervision to maintain the perfect temp.

Go get a Traeger Elite smoker. It has a hopper that you fill with pellets which automatically fills the smoke chamber to maintain a constant temperature for the full smoke. Set it in the morning when you leave for work. Come home 8 hrs later and dinner is ready!

I have a Bradley smoker as it is now. what draws me to the egg is year round cooking, They make the bbq huge now and they dont heat worth a sh*t in my experience. put a pinch of wind in there at sub zero temps and your screwed. The youtube videos of these eggs show them going to 600 degrees in a flash my bbq now is luck to hit 300 in the cold

I disagree. I leave my egg all day, more often all night and it's fine. Temps don't fluctuate on it. I could see it if a wind came up and tunneled into the air intake it would increase air temps. If there's ever a good breeze I just spin it so it's back is to the wind. I've even run it 23 hrs without opening the lid. Another thing I like about the egg, no power needed. I believe the pellet feed systems need power so either a plug has to be available or an extension cord must be run.
