When out at the range I notice there are a couple big guns that WILL NOT bench..My ruger 77 lott, and my chum's win 70 458 win. We have tried letting the forearm rest on its own,we have tried holding it,we have,we have, on and on. After a couple hundred rounds through my lott over a few months, I was out again one day shooting fly #### groups.Normally I'll use up my ammo, but seeing the day was going no different,I said the hell with it and started to pack up. In frustration I loaded 3 in and just flailed them off hand at the hundred. what 3 in an 1 1/4",ah thts a fluke,I'll throw 3 again 1 1/2",WHAT THE BLEEP????????. Comming home I was and still am pleased and sadened..I mean ultimately you shoot free hand,so I'm happy, but when your working up a new load its nice to bench. Cause if your doing it with 2$ a piece barnes and its 50 rounds cause you cant eliminate human error,no fun!!!!So I'm thinking of creating a platform that sits on our gun club rest that raises it so I'm straighter in posture, like my upper body was standing. I talked to a test fire tech at ruger and explained what I had been doing so far and he says they dont do anything different. All my other lott and win mag stuff does one holers.....Any ideas???????

What about using a standing rest? Liek the ones they regulate double rifles with.

Thats exactly where I've been thinking of going next. We have big 8" square upright beams at our club,I'm going to make a bracket with a rest to clamp onto one. Cause I THINK? that its rolling off the top of my shoulder in typical bench position

That is mighty impressive for off-hand shooting with any caliber. Many people can not do that off the bench.

Yes... My friend had a beautiful pre64 Wichester M70 in. 458..... Was a nice day at the range... I wanted to do some handgun shooting.... My buddy says "Hey Boris, wanna try my new loads out of the 458???? They are 600 grainers?!!!?" Being a true gun nut and would never turn down a free lunch from a starving man, I replied "Sure".... I fired a group of three. recoil never bothers me however:

1. No gun firing this caliber should only weigh 8 lbs!!!!!
2. Firing such a gun with only a tee-shirt on is not a good idea, let alone 3 shots!! :!:
3. Shooting such a beast under the above conditions from the bench, "anchoring in" isn't fit for man nor beast!!! :!:

I got up and my trigger arm was quivering for at least an hour... I lifted my handgun and knew that I would just be a spectator for the rest of the afternoon!!!!

You might also want to try the Caldwell Lead Sled shooting cradle. It allows you to ballast with as much weight as you can find. The rifle is held in this adjustable rest so the overall mass of the rifle includes the rest and ballast. A very simple and slick idea.

Someone had pics of their rest with about 100lbs of ballast on it. That would certainly take the sting out of the Lott and WM.

What the hell are you hunting anyways? I hear that Ontarian politicians are tough to put down but yikes....

My guess is that recoil flinching is causing your screwy shooting. Shooting upright allows the body to bend and this reduces the shock to the nervous system. A standing rest is fine but I think this ballasted rest will work better.
