Big howdy from Texas, y'all

Welcome,

I just joined up here today, but wanted to say welcome anyhow. I lived in TX for the best 2 years of my life (grad school in Denton) and if I could find a good job and go back, I would to...I absolutely loved it there...my home away from home. I have never been treated so well as I was when i was down there. Guess I'll have to meet a nice TX'n gal and head down.

God Bless Texas.
M

My first house was in Denton, we now live in Corinth which is the next town south on 35E, but still in Denton County. My wife graduated from U.N.T. so perhaps you and her attended the same university. We love Denton. It's still got that small town feel but is only 1/2 hr from either Dallas or Ft. Worth. I've joined the Denton chapter of the Viet Nam Vets, Chapter 920 and we're very active both in supporting the vets and promoting events on the square. I've made a lot of very good friends here...people here are very friendly. If you're ever back in Texas, make sure to drop and say "Howdy!" Derek.

Hi Derek,
I am planning on writing an article comparing Can. and US gun laws, so stuff like that is good to know.

Dean, I'll help you out all I can in that regard. A good place for you to start is getting a copy of the "Federal Firearms Regulations Reference Guide" which is available from the U.S. Dept. of Justice, Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, Office of Enforcement Programs and Services, Firearms Programs Division. (ain't that a mouthful!) In the interim, I can look up and hopefully answer any question you may have. Not all firearm regulations are in the purview of the Federal Government, some are regulated state by state i.e. Concealed carry (CHL), for instance. Further, penalties such as losing a CHL can be applied for violating State laws. Texas enacted the "Your Home is your Castle" doctrine many years ago and is currently extending that doctrine. Here is my recent post to Maple Leaf Up, you may find it of interest.

Just announced in the Dallas Morning news, a new self-defence Bill has unanimously passed both the upper and lower houses of the Texas state legislature and has been presented to the Governor for signing. The Bill makes three major changes to current law:

-It extends the "Your home is your castle" doctrine to anywhere a person "has a right to be."

-You can no longer be sued by the attacker, or their family.

-It creates a "presumption of self-defence" much like the presumption of innocence in all other cases.

Previously, if you used Deadly Force in self-defence outside of your home you could expect charges to be preferred and a lawsuit from the survivor or their family. Law abiding citizens who had used deadly force had been treated much as Rape victims were treated in the past, that somehow you were the Bad Actor or were looking for trouble when the attack occurred, further, you had to show proof that you had "attempted to retreat." No longer. Opponents of the Bill have complained that criminals may take advantage of this Bill to kill rival gang members, but the provisions of the Bill only apply to those who aren't in violation of the law during the act. So, if you are illegally in possesion of a firearm during the shooting, which all Gang-bangers are, you don't receive protection under the new Bill.
After decades of listening to clap-trap from Canadian Justice ministers of how "Canadians don't need fire-arms for self protection, we have the police to protect us.", it's refreshing to live in a part of the world where law abiding citizens can and may defend themselves! God bless Texas! Derek.

Hey Derek,
Will do, thanx for the friendly invite. I do plan on heading back sometime in the future for sure!
Yeah, I liked small D a lot too, and Corinth is nice spot. Still have some friends living down there. I did in fact go to UNTas well...I was there from around 2000-2002. When was your wife there. Man I miss those days.

K98, you're not the first of my Canadian buddies asking me how to get the heck outa Canada to live where gun control truly means hitting your target. I'll warn you though, you better like heat and lots of it if you want to move to Texas. I spent last summer working on the Thermal Rehab project at DFW airport. I worked on the roofs of the many terminals there and it wasn't a particularly hot summer...hottest day only hit 109, but on the roof it must have been at least 125 and we baked up there! There is tons of work here and your instrumentation experience will hold you in good stead with the oil industry. Lots of oil refineries down here. If I were you, I'd start surfing the oil companies websites looking for jobs that are going unfilled. The major oil companies here are Valero, Texaco, Exxon, British Petroleum and Shell to name a few.
There's a show on the Discovery Channel called "Future Weapons" It's hosted by an ex Navy SEAL and in a recent show they did a bit on sniper rifles and mentioned the record is held by a Canadian. I believe we're using MacMillans, aren't we?
Unfortunately I sold my gun collection before I moved to the U.S. I had only two Mausers, and I miss them both. One was a Spanish M95 in 7X57 and the other was a one of the Israeli K98s that had been converted to 7.62 NATO. Both great rifles.
Lots of German reenactors here in Texas, in fact at some events, they outnumber the Allies so you'll get your fill of Mausers down here.

Cheers Ex CME, thanks for the tip. Heat is good. Spent some time in Syria and Isreal. Lots and Lots of sun tanning, and booze. Golan Heights used to be a six month vacation,, umm I mean tour..:D

I love Texas, have you ever considered taking in an illegal immigrant from Canada? I'm a great cook, my favorite is to BBQ red meat, oh and best of all, I love guns! Please consider me for this position, I will clean your guns for you.

PS. Welcome aboard!

I was with Roto 58 if memory serves me right. Nov. '98 to May '99, so it was just starting to get hot when I returned to Canada. Met a Weapons Tech from CFB Edmonton and we had a ball scouring the area for battlefield pick-ups. Not too far from Camp Zouani in the old Syrian training camp I found a case of grenades and hundreds of rounds of belted 7.62 Nato...all API! I briefly entertained thoughts of stuffing them in my barrack box for the trip home....very briefly. I could tell you what we did bring back, but I don't think the Statute of Limitations is over yet!

I like your avatar Steve! I like the "reach out and touch someone" sentiment. Unfortunately we're already crawling with illegals, in fact it's a surprise that there is anyone left in Mexico, they're all here. If you like BBQ, then Texas is it! Texas is it for a lot of things: the economy here is nothing short of amazing, I wouldn't be surprised if the gross state product exceeded the GNP of Canada. Over 50 of the Fortune 500 companies have their head offices here. Boeing/Bell is building the V-22 Osprey here, Lockheed/Martin the F35 Joint Strike Fighter, and General Dynamics the F16. even Bombardier has a large facility here at DFW airport. And don't get me started on gun laws....concealed carry, full auto, and lethal force in self defence is not only legal, it's encouraged! God bless Texas!

After spending a bit of time in Houston, it sure opened my eyes to the two different worlds of gun control. I really enjoyed my time down there, and everyone at the ranges were friendly. It was sad to come home to these unnecessary gun laws.
