Me and my buddy went out with the hounds for 5 hours today. We had 20-30 different fresh tracks picked out that we could choose from. Found 12 going into one block, 8 together and 4 singles. It was just me and him and 4 hounds. We each had two hounds in each truck. He didn't want to run the dozen coyote block in fear for the dogs so we went to were a pair of coyotes crossed into one of our favour blocks. Well we sure pissed the hounds off today. They had both coyotes lifted within 10 minutes and hot on their trail. I seen the two red bones about 30 yards behind the pair of coyotes running full out across a field towards a road. They crossed before I got there, same with the next 5 roads. I swear the dogs would come to the road, see us there knowing we didn't get the coyote, give us a dirty look then keep going. We never even fired a shot all day and we ran 5 different coyotes. Just the way it goes I guess. After being frustrated all day and 4 wore out dogs with nothing to show for it, I went home, got my calls and decoy and me and my friend headed to the dozen coyote block.
We get there at 5pm, drive in to the 100 acre mark, then walk near the back of the next 100 acres. Its just polluted with fresh tracks, I had a smile on my face the entire walk in. Well we get settled in, about 75 yards apart, I'm watching downwind and him up-wind. Got my coyote decoy out 150 yards away in front of us in the middle of the field and my rabbit decoy about 30 yards away up wind. I started with a couple barks and two quick howls. Then waited 5 minutes. I'm just about to give another howl when I hear BOOM BOOM BOOM BOOM. Both me and my buddy look at each other wondering who it is shooting because its real close. Then one more shot and nothing. We figured the neighbours were shooting at the coyotes coming our way. Wait another minute or so then i give a couple pup distress than one male challenge howl. I just put the call down and I can see a coyote coming over the hill about 200 yards away up wind. I didn't think my buddy seen it so I raise my gun and just get the scope on him. I can see the coyote standing there starring at our decoy with the hair on his back standing up getting ready to commit. I'm getting ready to squeeze the trigger and BOOM he drops on the spot. Well my partner was faster than me. One coyote down. He's so excited he jumps up right away and runs after it, I seen another coyote take off behind where the last one came from. DAMN owell can't complain.
When walking back to the truck we can see someone standing at our truck, We had no idea who it was. Turns out it was the neighbour, he watched 4 coyotes crossing his field coming our way and he took 5 shots at about 350-400 yards with his open sights .303 lee enfield LMFAO
So between all of us we seen 6 coyotes, not sure where the other 6 were that should be in there. This coyote wasn't overly big, I think he just had a full stomach, because he weighted 52 lbs on my scale and my buddies calf scale.
We figure there is a deer kill in this block or something, to have this many coyotes in there. Never seen so many tracks before.
sorry about the crappy cell phone pic, I need a new one LOL
