I'm going to refinish a Mosin nagant stock. It has a big dent from another Mosin bolt handle and a bunch of scratches. Plan on using red mahogany stain.

Do I take the finish off before I pull the dint out with an iron and a wet towel or after when the finish is removed.

That looks like a good one for ironing out. Typically you would do it with bare wood. You could do it both before and after though....wont hurt anything.

Personally I'd pull the dent out post strip and might I suggest "gunstock" for the stain colour. I refinished two rifles(Chicom chuwood sks and ####ty tung oiled M44)in this stain plus a couple coats of clear and they look sweet.

I was looking at the gun stock color and it looked to reddish orange.

MN, may I respectfully suggest that if you're going to take the time to do it, do it right.

The Soviets and their satellites used different methods and it has been suggested that the "reddish Shellac" was put on as a preservative rather than an issue finish. This is a quote from gunboards.
This was posted at russian forum, I tried to translate it as good as possible. This is quote from prewar production standarts. SVT stocks finish was the same, at least before autumn 1941.

- Drying stocks by two-year exposure, to a moisture content of 6-8% (absolute humidity).
- Polishing the outer surface of the stock before finishing, according to the samples.
- Soak stock with boiled linseed oil, or roast stock superficially (I can't find equalent to this word in English, roast have close meaning).
- Shellac 8 layers.
- Final polishing, according to the samples.
I can suppose that during wartime shellac finish can not be used at some stocks (as at the stock that I posted above)
But as I mention, I own prewar Izhevsk stock without shellac finish.

This was Russian referenced, right? It makes sense. Google roasted wood, it is real, done to maple and birch. Leaves a brown toned durable finish similar to what has been presented here in the non shellac state. Wood is heated to 360-400F in the absence of oxygen. BLO finishing would appear as a varnish product. Pictures above even with flaking shellac show something similar underneath, not just white wood. A roasted stock would have color in the barrel channel. So, roasted or BLO, maybe both, maybe topped with shellac, in some instances not. Refurbs appear not to have been roasted.

I wouldnt heat the wood after applying blo. It will soak outta the wood and get tacky.

I imagin heating it would give u the same effect as when you cure a wodden spoon. Differnce is you oil a wodden spoon before curing.

Funny thing about shellac is it really is not a very durable finish, but many years ago it was the only finish there was (lacquer as the Chinese used aside)

Shellac comes in orange (garnet) blonde and clear ,and now de-waxed(you can make it yourself ,but a PITA unless you are into furniture finishes and French polishing)

Ye olde damp rag and an iron does work ,but best on bare wood and depending on how crushed the fibers are.

Shellac does not like alcohol (it`s solvent) which is why a good top coat of wax is used acting as a protective barrier(applied and buffed)

Anywho ,strip that SOB ,sand her down as usual (tack clothe as always) and some good old Minwax Gunstock stain ,followed by a few coats of satin poly will do the job nicely.

You may also mix stains until you achieve the color you want.Watco Fruitwood or Cherry mixed in with your stain and applied will also give you a subtle reddish finish.

If the finish you apply (the stain) does not look red enough ,you can add more of a reddish stain (wait 24 hours at least)to your polyurethane finish. This will do two things, add a protective clear coat(satin for sure) and tint the poly at the same time.So the more clear coats you add ,the more "tint" colour you will add ,until you achieve the colour you want.

Sorry for the long tutorial ,but I have done it all, sometimes it works and sometimes it works it goes FUBAR LOL

Paint.....enamel, lacquer, primers ,galvanized, zinc chromate....airbrushing....that`s a years full of threads right there.

Good luck with whatever you choose.

Finished pretty red for me. Gunstock appeared to be the most authentic colour to me so that's what I went with. In reality doesn't really matter it's your project and rifle so just enjoy it. Always enjoy a good stock refinishing thread as it always seems to draw the educated craftsman out of the woodwork almost like an SKS "build" thread. Title is a bit misleading though as first thing to come to mind was deprohibitization of the AK platform.

Ratnik has done a lot more research since 2013 and the above is not the accepted pre-war finish any longer.

It's now a mordant coating to cured wood, followed by nitro-cellulose lacquer until mid-war.

Then there were a variety of wartime expedient finishes, including oiled wood. Shellac is post-war.
