Well in my state you purchase a permit, it lasts a year or 3 years and you can shoot as many as you can find.
It also alows you to hunt alot of land like crown land just not in some national parks.
Min cal is a .270 an only stalking in daylight hours, you can use hounds on special different permit in special areas.
hope that helps

I understand it's tough hunting to get a crack at even one Sambar. Congrats on your second.
I was just shooting .358" 225gr partitions at paper last night out of my 350WSM - at 2900MV. Sure wish I had a Sambar or two to try it out on like you WhelanLad - especially because that wildcat began life as the "35 Sambar" in the land of Oz.

Cheers WhelenB, Bit of a suprise for me to have got 2 sambars in a Week, plus i missed a stag early last week an was honked n eluded by a spikey the week before!
ive only ever shot 5 sambar.. but im learning an im loving it.

thats true about the 35sambar. aus made :)
the 225s still shoot really flat in my rifle, long range shot an it still got it mid height 4 ribs back in the "chest" broadside shot.. im happy!

They are ruttin in some areas at the moment, sambar have a different rut an anrt all on at the same time, different areas different deer different time, therefore can be in velvet or hand antler anytime of the year, while a deer in the next door gulley system can be the total opposite.

yeah indeed like a Cow Elk, an a stag is like a Bull Elk, Heres some photos of Big mature stags..
Trophy class for them is 30inch, biggest one ive heard of is 33inch by a bow hunter!
