We set up on a Ridge down In a swamp.we knew the birds were roosting along to top of the gully and using this Ridge to strutting on. At first light we had 5 Tom's sound off and we knew we were in the game.just about time for them to fly down I did the kakkel and wave my hat like a turkey wing .and then the rain starts hard. Lol so thy pitched down to the south of us out in a feild going away ...we sit a while and do some soft calling and see a tom sneak across the path farther down from us. Ya we are back in the game. Some more soft calling and here he comes with a buddy. .she shoved her pump out the window on my side of the blind and light him up at 20 yards. Can't stop the flop.lol

Called in this tom for my brother in law opening morning. Scouting had revealed this flock was roosting on a mixed conifer/hardwood ridge near a pond and then moving off northward toward large hardwood ridges where they spent most of their day. I identified the primary travel route and created three setup locations for the three hunters involved (myself, brother in law, father in law). We were in position by 4:30 AM and the birds began gobbling shortly after 5:00 AM. We were located about 100 meters from the roost. The other two hunters were the designated "shooters" covering likely approaches while I was sitting about 20 meters from each and slightly behind as the caller. I let out a few light tree yelps on my Gobblestalker slate (I bought this call in 2011 and since then has proven deadly on "soft talk" for gobblers) and immediately the birds gobbled on the roost. Around 5:45 AM a hen flew down nearby so I took my cue and simulated a flydown with the Primos wing I have. Sure enough three longbeards glided down into the forest. Some light clucks and purrs had them on a string toward me. My brother in law made a fine 25 meter shot on the lead bird and dropped him (22 lb, 9 inch beard, 1 inch spurs). We tried to bring in the other toms, but they were having none of it and slipped away. A great (but cold) morning in the timber.
