Big Upgrade

Ruger? Pics?

I can pick this one up from the post office tomorrow, just a matter of getting to the range with no membership at the local one or nearbye crown land

It’s an older classic stainless M70 that someone chopped and put a neat set of adjustable express sights on. Wasn’t really looking for one but I couldn’t pass it up. Should make a good hiking/bush gun. I’m envious of your peep sight I prefer them over open sights by a large margin. If anyone can tell me who made the rear sight I would appreciate it.

Interesting rear sight. I really like that concept but I don’t know how I feel about the execution.

SAKO peep is very fine with the insert. Probably going to try it without a scope and some old loads. Might make it hard to show off the groups online though

Sighted in with the peep, very promising. These sights are very well made, more like using a diopter target ring than a ghost ring. Might have to re sight it in without the insert if I want to carry it around while not hunting. I only had 100 yards but no doubt nothing in North America within 0-200 metres is safe from this combo.

Awesome. Have you figured out what you’re going to use for scope mounts? And what scope?

I think I’m going to go leupold DDs and an M8 4x33

Congrats on your new acquisition! Your a brave man, I could never shoot such a big shoulder pounding cartridge. Well, I did once, never again.

Perhaps the 338 Win Mag goes past the "comfort zone" for some? In 1980's I had bought a used Winchester Model 70 in 338 Win Mag - a pretty much standard wood stock, push-feed, 24" barrel. I was likely loading "warm" 210 grain Partitions in those days - my 14 year old son had repeatedly fired three round strings, off hand - said it made his 308 Win feel "puny" - his words, at the time. But technique and stock fit, and perhaps a bit of coaching, had him shooting the thing readily - to my knowledge, he has never fired it from a shooting bench or from sandbag rests. As an experiment, I worked up pretty much "full power" loads with Nosler 250 grain Partition and Sierra 250 grain SPBT - was an increase in recoil that was noticeable when shooting from bench - not sure that would be noticed if standing? Current loading for that rifle is 225 grain Accubond at pretty much 2,800 fps muzzle velocity - from a Shooting Chrony. Nice triangle 3 shot groups - several - at 100 yards from sandbags. I have hunted with it with various scopes - now has a Leupold M8-6x installed. Most all three shot groups would get pieces of a "looney" - so about an inch or so, for three shots, at 100 yards, from sandbag rest.

About that time, I had read an article by Elmer Keith in Guns and Ammo magazine - with his view of the world - he thought the 338 Win Mag with 275 and 300 grain bullets made a fine long range antelope rifle - he might have been "trolling", as I think he did often, but felt it was a much, much better rifle to hunt Western USA than was the 270 Win. Which, usually, would bring a response from Jack O'Connor in another article in another magazine...

Loaded some 200 grain sierras which a previous owner had cooked up a load for, as well as a handful of factory 250 loads and some 250 grain NP handloads, h4831 for both.

Maybe I will sight the irons in with a 300 grain woodleigh load if I chose to put a scope on it.

Years ago the Old Man had a M700 Classic in 338 that he had the barrel shortened to (if memory serves) 21" and he cut back the forend an inch or so to keep the lines complimentary. As I recall it was essentially a Model 7 on steroids. I believe that he took it to the barrens once for caribou and might have used it along the Ingraham Trail as well. He sold it in the early to mid 90s and I've often wondered which of you gunnuitz has it now.

Well Leupold 2.5-8x is not long enough to mount on this rifle.

Any suggestions for a similar optic that will fit?

2-7x33 has a longer tube. Try for an older one that has the ocular lock ring, the newer “fast focus” ones move too easily.

Well, I don’t normally post pictures of groups but how could I refuse Slimbos request for a report?

I have put a 1.75-6x32 B&L elite on it. Yes I know, it deserves a nicer scope; at this rate maybe in a couple years when I finish school.

Component supply is a little light so I went out today with just a handful of loads to get a vague idea of what’s going on and think I stumbled into a good load .5 a grain below max. I guess Old Elmers ghost was smiling down on me as I was launching Speer 275 grain semi spitzers with H4831.

Sorry for some reason I felt that connecting the dots on the seperate groups would make it easier to see despite each hole being labelled with powder charge. This was not the case and it’s kind of a mess. I cut out the 68.5 group for my little load notebook for the rifle. There is a 68 grain hole in there too on the stack of three.

Honestly the other groups opening to ~2 (68 grains) and ~1.5 (69 grains, book max) with the third shot is probably on me. Pretty out of practice these days and I ever so gently kissed my forehead/glasses with the scope on the 2nd shot of the 68 grain group.
