If true, the vast majority of those would be bacteria, virus, insects, etc. Nothing that would be particularly impressive.

This article says that between 1/3 and 2/3rds of marine species have been discovered but emphasis on the fact that's just an estimate.
Nobody doubts that there are unknown creatures out there but the bigger and more unique it is, the harder it is to believe that it could maintain a stable breeding population without leaving behind any evidence.
It was an interview, I think, not a study.
