BigHorn Arms TL3 Multi Calibre Advice - Updated with Pics of Completed Build

Ha HA good guess. I'll do that. Offer to come see my Defianace if you want. Always nice to see and feel a action first hand before buying one.

Heck yeah I wouldn’t mind seeing one first before buying one! My stag 10 is up for grabs now to fund another build. Can’t believe I put her up for grabs lol

Im in the same boat.. gotta see what I can liquidate to fund a long action Big horn SR3.

Seriously thinking of that action with barrels in .28, .30 and .33 Nosler... and a .280AI barrel for good measure. Oh and a .35 Whelen lol.

It never ends.

Hope you have better luck selling than I have. Thought my 280AI Cooper would of sold long ago! I'm going SHERMAN SHORT if I can sell a gun or two. 6SST, 25SS, maybe a 7SS and a 338SS. WIth the numbers Rich is getting out of these I don't see a need for a long action. The 338SS is driving a 250 Berger at 2800fps plus! My 6.5 Sherman is a beast. Drives 140 Bergers at 3339 fps out of a 28" Hart.

Here's a shot of the Benchmark barrels I've gotten in so far. Both in 6.5 mm (.264)

Top is a #4 contour, at 22'' finished (24'' now)

Bottom is a #2 contour at 20'' finished (22'' now).

Not as much difference between a #2 and #4 contour as I would have thought actually.. the #2 is still quite substantial. Nothing even close to the UL setups I have.

I have some TL3s and an SR3. I like the fact that the SR3 can be had with the Wyatt's extended box (ID of 3.825"). A fair bit extra length over the CIP cut TL3 (which is about 3.77").

A couple options on barrels becoming available now too. PVA shouldered prefits are available through Go Big Tactical. PROOF also announced around SHOT that they will be offering shouldered prefits as well.

Finally got this one built up.. if anyone's interested here's some pics. Just need to decide on an optic and it'll be good to go!

Decided on .223 Wylde, .308 Win and 6.5CM. All the barrels are Benchmarks in the BigHorn Varmint profile. Stock is a Manners MCS-TA.

As it so easy to swap barrels, will likely add a few more calibers to play around with.

My original idea of a hybrid hunting/precision didn't quite work out. This is a heavy rig. Next build will be carbon fiber barrels for sure to shave a little weight. Also should have went a little shorter on the barrels. These are around 21'', next barrels for this rig will be 18'' (maybe less).

A big shout out to Gary at Bighorn Sales, as he was able to import all the parts for this build.

The ARCA rail is a Really Right Stuff that is specific to the mini-chassis. It goes where the barricade stop would be. Super easy and clean.

Will have to weigh the stock next time I have it apart for an exact weight.

Both the 338 Federal and the 358 Win are great short action cartridges that would be good options to pair with your others on your Bighorn rifle.
Bullet weights from 160-225 gr between the two with enough punch on any game in north america at short to medium ranges (dependent upon target animal).
Have used both of these on deer, caribou, moose and elk to date, and seen the 358 used on bison, and read many good stories on their use on grizzly and brown bears over the years.
Out to 250 yards, they carry good energy and require a dead on hold when zeroed at 200 yards and still stay inside a 4" circle, even from a 20" barrels.
I have primarily used the 200 and 210gr factory ammunition in both, and handloads in the 358 to date with 220 and 225 gr bullets.

I haven't seen the bighorn actions either so cannot say anything about them. Glad to hear reports here that they are very smooth!
The Defiant actions seem smooth, but I was very impressed with how smooth the Borden actions were, when RMR was building customs with them.

My one build with a Benchmark barrel (6.5 CM with the 5R rifling in a 1:8 twist) shoots very well (1/2 MOA with factory ammunition).
My current build is on a LH Sako 85 Finnlight II to 338 Federal with a 22" carbon fibre barrel 1:10 twist in a light contour. (love how smooth these factory actions run) Planning on using the 200gr AccuBond in this rifle.
Will see how the factory stock works for now. Not sure as to what it will end up in, but probably also have a nice piece of wood (French or New Zealand) for nice weather hunts.
