Bighorn origin action information

In the meantime, if anyone here on CGN is using a Nucleus or Origin action please post up.
I am giving custom actions a try, and making sure i get everything squared out.
All while keeping it Savage prefit to keep gunsmiths at bay if i can.

I have a Nucleus. So far it's seen 2000 rds of .223 and 600 or so rounds of 6 Creedmoor. No hiccups, runs like a champ. I use MDT plastic mags for .223 and MDT 12 rounders for 6 Creed.

And another thought if you are going to go with a high-end custom action the Impact 737 R can do pre-fits in a way. They hold their tolerances so tight that any barrel marker should be able take one of their blueprints and pre-thread and chamber the barrel that you can install the barrel yourself and torque it and you're done!

If he has the budget, a barreled Impact action from Insite would be pretty hard to beat.

What stock or chassis your Nucleus is in?
Did you tune your 12 round mags whatsoever?
Does the bullet tip hit the feedramp at all or direct feed?

Plenty of people having excellent results with the Bighorn Origin.

Just do it - once you get into a real custom action (like the Bighorn), you are never going to want to touch your Savages again.

That's a harsh statement!
I get that Savage is lower grade than custom actions,
Between my 3 Savages, and 3000+ rounds shot now (2000+ in my main that's using MDT ESS and IBI barrel),
Never had a fail to feed, fire, extract, eject, eff all, just went bang and fed everytime.
When i cycle a tikka yes it is 100x smoother (never cycled any customs other for Ultimatum Deadline), but doesn't mean i'll want to junk my current builds because i suddenly have a higher end one.

Bighorns feed fine from aics mags, had a few and they all worked fine, built more than a few and again no issues. I do how ever find that no matter the brand of aics style mags they all need a little tweaking to smooth them out. Now I just do it before I use them.

AICS mags need tweeking before being used in the Origin?
What sort of tune, feedlip angle?
I am trying to stay away from this and use an action that will use MDT metal mags right off the bat no modifications.

I have a Bighorn Origin in 6.5CM. Feeds no problem out of the MDT 12 round mags. Taking it out for the first time next week (just arrived recently). Feel free to DM me any questions.

I will be in contact via PM with you soon enough,
Exactly what i need, first hand experience.

If they are in the 2K budget it will be out of my way.
Was thinking Nucleus or origin, manners stock, IBI barrel, trigger tech special trigger (because diamond can't go 2.5lbs),
And stay within 4200-4400$ give or take.

Will recycle a razor gen ll 4-27 on a spuhr mount for this one, and interchange it back to my savage on ranges that disallow 6.5,
At least it makes this project more accessible.

Another good budget friendly custom action would be a Kelbly barreled action from Insite Arms.

One of the better priced custom actions available in Canada.

You will end up with a great build one way or the other. The action really does come down to personal preference. For me the Bighorn TL3 ticked all the boxed I wanted out of action, closed top, CRF, Savage Prefits (even though I ended up with a shouldered IBI), changeable bolt faces, mechanical ejector, integral lug, external bolt stop, and changeable bolt handles. My biggest complaint is the bolted on rail which is me being beyond knit picky.

Tl3 or impact precision if you have the money. If not go origin I’d say.

Anybody think I’m stupid for wanting to do a second custom 223 build? I already have a bighorn tl3 223 with 24” mtu barrel and it’s a beast. I’m really into the idea of an impact precision 223 (possibly 308 or 6.5) with a lighter varmint contour or medium ish Palma barrel for a new Carey friendly varmint target rifle. Am I stupid for wanting to do it in 223 again? lol

I have a Nucleus I put about 300 rounds of 6.5 creedmoor through it and about 400 6 Dasher zero problems at all I love it. Comparing to another 3 lug action this has been super easy to deal with. I’m currently running it with a prefit savage short shank IBI barrel and it is a laser the smoothest action I’ve used. When I burn out this barrel I’ll switch to an IBI shouldered barrel. If you are on the fence I suggest just going for the Nucleus you won’t be disapoimted

Can I ask what you are using for stock/chassis and mags?
Reading on the nucleus it would seem the 3rd lug is pointing up rather than pointing down, I am guessing this allows for the mag to sit higher and truly feed AICS with little tuning.
Had to modify your mags?

I run it in an MDT ACC. I did no tuning to the 12 round mags, they just run. I've honestly never checked to see if the bullet hits the feedramp before going into the chamber, it just runs smooth and shoots small groups so I don't care to screw around to check things like that, haha.

If they run smooth they are not hitting that ramp hard,
My other action bullets we’re hitting that ramp head on, you would feel ammo clunking as it chambered,
enough to induce runout in my zero thou runout ammo!

Right now i am definitely interested in either origin or nucleus,
I’ll give it a few weeks and try to find one at my local 900M range,
Still uneasy purchasing sight unseen.

Another shout out for bighorn TL3. I had a whack of barrels from my custom savages, and this action is slick and consistent.
Slapped it in a MPA chassis - couldn't be happier.

Have a few Big Horns, specifically the TL3 and SR3.

Saw an Origin in person, nothing wrong with it at all. I’d still go for the TL3.

If money or the best “value” is a consideration, get the Origin. Otherwise the TL3 is money well spent.
