Posted this in the gundog sticky but I'll add it here as well.

I just read about a private members bill ( it has almost no chance of being passed) that illustrates the invasive intent of some ill informed political opportunists to cater to animal rights extremists.

Kennedy Stewart Burnaby—Douglas, BC

moved for leave to introduce Bill C-615, An Act to amend the Criminal Code (cruelty to animals—electric shock collars).
Mr. Speaker, I am proud to rise today to introduce a private member's bill promoting animal welfare in Canada. This bill would ban the use of harmful electric shock collars on companion animals, better known as “household pets”. Using shock collars is widely recognized as causing needless pain and being cruel and inhumane, and use has been restricted in numerous other jurisdictions.
I am particularly honoured to be putting this bill forward, because it is a truly constituent-driven initiative. It is inspired by Gwendy and Alfie Williams, two committed advocates from my riding of Burnaby—Douglas, who have been mobilizing concerned citizens to protect animals for more than seven years. Without a doubt, never before has my office received so many petitions and letters on a single specific issue. However, really what swung me to action is a local elementary school. Students from this school joined the chorus of voices seeking a ban on the use of these harmful shock collars.

People always seem to forget that livestock is property to do with as you please. Not that I advocate being needlessly malicious towards an animal whether you own it or not, but come on...

Guy i knew.....only a little....had a Rotty that was a barker. Story i heard was the Son in Law gets one of these for the dog. Says out loud.."i wonder if this works"...puts it on with about 6 people standing around...Guy goes "WOOF..WOOF" Falls down thrashing in pain on the floor...Everyone breaks out laughing....collar just pours it on...

Look Frost.

I have used ecollars ( often called shock collars) for very specific reasons, eg. I had a dog that would run deer and a few exposures to a moderate correction( the instructions tell you have to determine the correct stimulus level) and the behaviour was extinguished probably saving the dogs life. Like all training devices they need to be used correctly and intelligently, most all of the manufacturers warn they are NOT to be used to cure aggression,in fact it will trigger the aggressive behaviour in most dogs. The collars come with instructions for use and are not meant as a long range whip, but rather a long range correction similar in severity to using a training collar ( also erroneously called a choke collar). I have seen ecollars used in stupid ways but that is also true with training collars, and other training devices. To label a tool as cruel is the act of the ill informed and those ignorant of its use.

I have to 100% agree with you hunter... Ive also seen pictures of dogs that had multiple puncture wounds on their necks from those prong choke collars and the problem... Not the collar, the fricking idiot that doesn't know how to use the dam thing to make proper corrections.

i have a German Short Haired Pointer and he runs around the yard care free chasing squirrels and rabbits and such. if he didnt have a collar he would be miserable tied to rope or chain. that collar allows him to be safe and be a dog.

I've got both types of collars. There made my persafe. Both use shock. One type for the yrd so they can run around and never go out of the yrd and end up somewhere they shouldn't be or dead. The other type strickly for barking.I will say as well if there not used properly they cut into the skin and leave sores, etc. but that when ther idiot that puts them on doesn't know what he's doing and hasn't read the instructions on use.Never had a prob with any of mine used they way there ment to be used.Once the dog knows what there for and why they get a shock the batteries come out and no dogs barking and never leaving the yrd.The house dogs are running around the property having a great old time and the hounds are quiet, what more can you ask for.

I've used an e caller on my labs for years and they are essentially a mile long check cord. Like anything else is used inappropriately or vindictively you have a problem. I kept my lab off a porcupine she wanted to "chat with" and that would have undoubtedly occured if not for the collar as she was well beyond arms reach. Is it any less humane to put a leash around a dogs neck and correct them? However, the MP obviously felt this would placate some constiuents and or get their name on the record in the House.

Pinch, spike and e-collars are already illegal in QC. It's a very short-sighted, knee-jerk reaction to a problem caused by people - not things. Sound familiar?

Where does one draw the line? Surely electric fences must be banned - you get a shock that really hurts if you touch them. Riding crops should probably go, too. Can I slaughter my own pet chicken, or is that cruel?

An e-collar is just another training tool, a remote training tool. And we've all tried the various shock levels to see how it feels. On my 8-level collar, 1 I can't even feel on my hand. 2 I feel something if I hold it tight. 3 I feel a small current, but less than a 9V battery on your tongue. 4 is the first level that you would say felt uncomfortable, but not undue pain. Like that sensitive tooth you sometimes bite too hard on. Usually I kept it on 4, but I always gave one beeper warning. After the very first 'hit', the beep alone was all that was needed. She knew her commands and would obey them when close. But she decided that since she was faster than me, she didn't always have to listen. They don't call them "hearing aids" for nothing.

The amount of money spent just to read that bill would have solved homelessness/mental health issues in a deserving canadian community.

####ing government.

There are two kinds of shock collars, one is activated manually by a remote and the other, the bark collar, is activated by the vibrations of the dogs vocal cords cords when barking. The bark collar will give a warning tone first then a shock if the barking continues and the intensity level will increase if the barking continues. Once the barking stops for a set period of time, 10 seconds I believe, the collar resets to the lowest level. So unless the people standing around were laughing so hard that it was causing enough vibrations in the guy wearing the collar to activate the collar, I would call that story complete BS. However, they do deliver a pretty good jolt when on the maximum setting....

If I didn't have the option of having an e-collar for my dogs they wouldn't be able to enjoy the yard as much as they should. Living in "the country" affords me the larger yard but it also means no fence, a highway nearby and lots of wild animals to tempt my animals to stray from the property. If this moron wants to take some of the money he wasted reading that bill and put in an 8 foot high fence around at least an acre of my property (I have a big dog) then I am 100% behind it.

Never mind that, how about he takes that money and puts it towards programs that end actual animal abuse instead of limiting our abilities to co-habitat with our pets?

Fecking nanny state BS...
