Billet AR180B Lower, Project Defiant (range report post #92)

cut link distance was set to high
I figured it out. I was playing with the filter setting to make the code smaller. I didn't filter when I engraved the other side and it looks perfect.
rough it to 1 or 2 mm then send it out for edm, that will give you the best result
I'll likely just cut it as best I can and hand file. For a one off, it's easy enough and I want to keep costs down. I might look around and see if I can bootstrap it on with a run from another company cutting AR15 mag wells.
That's a nice machine. Can it do the mag well too. Or do you use a different machine for that.
As mentioned, I'll drill the corners and mill it as close as I can. I'll do that on the mill. I wish we had an EDM machine.

We sent one out for wire edm, it cost about $85. The others we made we used our old edm and made the electrode and it worked actually better. It took about 3 hours though to do an ar 15 and 8 hours to do an ar10 magwell.

Proof positive of the law of nature that:

"When guns are outlawed, only outlaws...and machinists, will have guns!"

Great job, although I'm sure it will raise more than one eyebrow as a result of your engravings. That isn' necessarily a bad thing. Wish I had the skill and machinesto duplicate your efforts.

Was wondering what Cad/cam package you are using? I just got a new VMC(with 4th axis) to play with at work. Now just need to pick some software. Leaning towards Gibbs at the moment

I use MasterCAM. I am self taught and find it to be a complete pile of #### when it comes to ease of use and working with solid models. MasterCAM has a huge learning curve and in my opinion is klunky and a waste of money. When working with Solids, I'm constantly having to draw in geometry just to get it to do what I want. I'm rarely ever using the actual solid model create the tool paths. Change the location of a single hole? Good news, you are starting from scratch.

I've done some looking around and have a hard-on for SolidCAM, since I use Solidworks for my modeling. It plugs right into Solidworks and is completely associative to the model. It's look ridiculously easy to use.
