I have taken up still hunting for coastal blacktail deer I am hunting thick bush where you can see from only a few feet to 100 - 125 yards max.

I use 10X binoculars now and find them to be a bit hard to use in these short range conditions.

I am looking for recommendations/suggestions for a pair of binoculars that would have a low enough magnification that I can hold them steady with one hand but still be able to spot a tine or an ear at 125 yards.

Since blacktall hunting always seems to be going down in the rain, I've been thinking a Bushnell bino with Rainguard might be the ticket. The 7x26 Elite compacts might work well, with good glass, too.

I use a pair of Zeiss 7X42's. Not a "compact" bino but with a bino-buddy style holder I can wear them all day and not really notice them. They rock in low light! I bought my wife a set of Kowa 10 X33- very nice glass in a smaller package.

I hunt the same conditions myself but I still prefer 10x. I like to have the extra power for a situation where you might need to identify the animal at low light at distances closer to 100yds. I have found when it starts to get dark it can be difficult to see if the deer has antlers or not, especially if the backdrop is a darker color, the antlers seem to blend in, so it's nice to have the option of bringing it in closer. I know what your saying about holding them steady enough. I noticed you said that you try to hold the binocs with one hand sometimes, does this mean the other hand is holding the rifle? If so give a safari sling a try, holds the rifle at your front in the 'ready' position for a quick draw, so both hands are always free for holding the binocs. Just my experience. Good luck with your choice

From what I understand about how our eyes are constructed 10X is harder for us to see thru/use than 6X - 7X - 8x binoculars except for when we are looking at one specific spot example look at what you are reading only a few words are in focus we see the rest but they are out of focus until we shift where we are looking.

10X helps us see that small center focus area but makes it far harder to see outside of it while we are glassing which could result in missing an ear flicker or a tine move this is one of the reasons I am looking for a set of lower magnification bino's.

Going to check out the Bushnell Elite 7X and Vortex Vipers 6X keep the suggestions coming I totally appreciate them.

Search zen ray optics, I own binocs and spotter, high end glass, lifetime warranty, compares to the big three
Few buddies have ordered them now after looking through mine,,,,,, Made in china,,,,,,,, read the reviews yourself.
I can,t afford all high end glass yet I do own Swarovski z5 scope and the glass is comparable.
