Bipod question

Changing the support style can influence grouping and you may have to work on your technique.

Rifles which recoil less like the .17 Mach IV are less influenced. I did a bit of practice at 300yds - rest verses bipod and fund no difference in this instance.

What technique changes can improve the situation?

A solid rest and sandbags from either the bench or the ground will always be more accurate than a bipod.

As Joe stated the more recoil there is, the less accurate a bipod will be in comparison.

You will have to test yourself and your rifle to actually find out. It may make no difference depending on your ability.

In the field or at the range I prefer bags. A small bag of sawdust weighs little and can be carried around easily enough for field use. At the range I use an old Wichita front rest whether prone or off the bench. I've just never been a fan of bipods. Regards, Bill.

Hi Powdergun,
It really comes down to what your comforatable with. I fired one of Popurhedoff's sniper rifles and on the first shot managed to take the primer out of a 12 gage shell at a couple hundred meters (from a bipod, sitting). That is not because I'm so good, that is because his rifle is "perfect".

Yes, but try duplicating or triplicating that shot with a bipod. Bipods are great for hunting and snipiing, they are not consistent enough for target shooting and tack driving. The logic as others have stated is that there is always a little variation. Heavy rests allow for a constant which means less variable movement which allows for increased accuracy. Preferewnce is one thing but accuracy can be best achieved by a heavy bench with baby or talcum powder to allow for consistent recoil slide.

Bill, I hope its a water proof bag! Of course, the any water it absorbs might help create a more stable surface..... I might try that idea... of course I'd need a big bag or multiple bags for field use....
