I am seeking the experience of the masses. I currently shoot on an Atlas bipod (forget the model, was their biggest back when I bought it). Anyway, the rifle it's on weighs 69 lbs. as rigged, and I can't keep the cant locked solid. Any other bipods I look at seem to all use the same system, a friction fit tightened by the locking lever of the cant adjustment.
Wondering if there is something out there where the pivot point of the cant is on a different axis and the lock-up would be more solid?

Hope my clumsy explanation explains what I'm looking for......

That's a heavy rifle. The Accu-Tac HD-50 may be an option but it has a similar design to the Atlas.
I don't own one, but the Elite Iron revolution bipod may be worth looking at.

Thanks for that. I've looked at the HD-50 and believe it is vitually identical to the Atlas in terms of the lock-up.
That revolution bipod is interesting, but I'm dealing with a 4" flat forend, so it won't work.

While I have never run a 70lb rifle, I do run in the 35-40lb range.

I like the Cadex Falcon and the Accutac HD 50 for folding bipods. I found the Atlas flopsy, but both of these lock up quite acceptably and have survived a hefty amount of EnABELR recoil.

The Cadex has a channel that the entire pivot assemble rides in, like an LRA if you have one of those handy. It locks up well enough you really need to back it off to get it to move.

The Accutac HD50 has a main pivot bolt that takes the weight and an offset raceway with the cant tensioner that gives it lots of leverage to handle the heavier weights.

The LRA bipods have a pretty solid lockup for cant.

The earlier versions of the Atlas (which I have), all suffer from the cant loosening. The original tension wheel sucks - so much that there's aftermarket wrenches to use with is as a solution: https://victorcompanyusa.com/atlas-tension-wrench.

The newer Atlas' have a revised system, which to my understanding works much better than the earlier ones. The Atlas Super-CAL is an option, and built for applications like yours.

The Atlas S-Cal is what I currently have.

There was an AccuTac HD50 here a couple weeks back, wish I'd have looked it over better.

Harwood - That Cadex looks interesting. Would it accommodate a 4" flat forend?

That is one beefy forend!

I think the Cadex would be fine, but the Accutac would need a spacer.

The Accutac attaches to the stock below the peak of the legs.

The Cadex at full cant would be just touching the top of the leg hinge.

I missed that you have a 4" wide forend. That's certainly going to limit options.

Are you using a BR style stock? If so, you may need a BR style front rest, like a SEB NEO. Those can accommodate up to a 6" wide forend.

Are you using a stock similar to this, with a wide square forend?

Yup.

I already have a front rest which works fine. But I also want to have a usable bipod. I do have a SEB Joypod, but it just feels light to be using on this gun. (Although come to think of it, I have seen one used on a heavy gun.) Maybe I should rig him on there and see. I don't like front-steering, but I don't have to use that feature I guess.....

Bringing this back up as I stumbled across two ELR/heavy rifle bipods that look quite interesting.
They're made by Fusion Pro Shooting in the US - the Duo Outlaw and KO2M. Very wide footprints and beefy.
I don't know anything about them, literally just stumbled across a 3 month old post on SH that mentioned them.

Those do look interesting for sure. And stout.

For my problem I decided to try the Cadex Falcon, just waiting for it to arrive from EM Precision.

I’m thinking something that heavy maybe a Railroad tie. Lol. Are you bringing that to the Turkey shoot Sept 9. Great conversation piece.

I would, just to show ya! But we are at the cannon shoot that weekend. (It's even bigger)
Else I'd be down to another of your shoots for sure.

Update

I went with the Cadex Falcon (from EM Precision). It works. The lock-up surface area is much greater than other designs I tried. Had to add a riser to my pic rail due to my wide forend, but it locks up solid and holds.

The previous Atlas bipod only really locks on the outside diameter of the brass washer:

The Cadex has a much larger locking area:
