Bipods!

I have always used a Harris 6-9 with notched legs and cant feature for bench or prone. Never used one on a rimfire, I just used bags, etc.
Bipods have become ridiculous in price lately.

Swivel meaning rock back and forth to level out yes, but in my expereince the L-R panning/tracking isn't really necessary.
The other thing to consider is height. I'm 6'1", and my wife 5'1". I can use the 6-9 on the bench, she can use it when prone. I need the 9-12 for prone, the 6-9 is too low.
Caldwell or Champion are good low cost options if you're not "mission critical". Harris are very solid but'll cost you 140$ ish. Then from there you're looking 3-600$.

Harris with the notched legs and swivel base are the way to go . If shooting mainly in the prone position on a rifle range the 6-9 in and for field firing the 9-12 may work better for you. Forgot how to inbed videos but the info is below. I have a couple of the Harris , one with claw feet (below) and another one with the rubber feet.
If getting the swivel base get a bipod locking lever for the swivel as well as it works better than the original
I also have a couple Caldwells one on a Savage 22WMR and a really high one on my Rem 243 in LSS chassis .
While not a Harris they are still fairly decent and a lot cheaper .

Lots of good info, thanks guys. Those notched leg Harris bipods look very nice. I will probably get one for my next rifle in 223 but was looking for something a little more budget friendly for my 22. I was looking at amazon.ca and found a relatively cheap Caldwell one https://www.amazon.ca/Caldwell-Pivot-Model-Bipod-Inch/dp/B0032MUIL4/ref=sr_1_3?ie=UTF8&qid=1480450497&sr=8-3&keywords=harris%2Bbipod&th=1&psc=1 looks like it has the pop-out legs like the Harris.

Harris is the best & original, all others that look like this are a knock off / copy. I have a Caldwell bipod going on EE soon, which looks like a Harris is ok but the quality isn't a Harris. Harris is proven in combat.

i have a caldwell which was nice and tight when new but is really loose even with the lock at it's tightest now-it's 5 years old-it works okay for a rimfire but my Harris ones are rock solid.
i find the 6-9's are just perfect for me-but definately the leg nothched ones are the nicest.

For me it's the MPOD from Mystic precision. More expensive but it gives you an extremely stable rest and is very versatile. Of course it fits only Anschutz type rails ( straight forends required )but if your rifle does not have one, Jerry will sell you a little rail adaptor for a few bucks.

Just received mine today from Nordic Marksman they had some rebate on it.
Got the 6-9 notched leg swivel which is the most expensive but look on the ee people are selling their cheaper ones for a Harris..

They are out of stock now of the swivel one
. I ordered that one I linked in an earlier post from amazon but decided to cancel it so I can find a Harris. Is it common practise to buy one bipod and rotate it to multiple rifles or do people generally buy one for each rifle?

OP, this is a .22lr right? I recommend you go full retard and get an LRA bipod.
All kidding aside, like everyone here said, Harris is a good one if you don't mind spending a few extra bucks.

While I may have a non-Harris it was a gift of sorts.
Harris is the only one to buy as everything else is a throwaway.
A Harris can be sent to Harris Engineering in Kentucky for repair . . . everything else is recycled!
Now there is a rider to that statement . . . a non-Harris will be returned if you have enclosed the return postage!
I sent two to Harris and paid the postage but Harris repaired and paid the return postage.
They were getting a little tired either with an accumulation of dirt or the springs were playing out.
Get the notched leg models. One leg can be set and the other shot to the lowest point. The swivel is sometimes a little too loose but a level is on that scope/rifle combination.
All of my rifles wear a bipod. Even the 10/22 does once the sling swivels were removed and replaced with a stud.
Buy a Harris and shed no tears.

Depends on your wishes. I have several that I move around. It takes all of 12 seconds to move them.
For hunting I have a Harris 12-25, but for prone target 9-12, or my MPOD for my FTR rifle or my .338....
Having common mounting on all your rifles can be a challenge. Sling studs are very common and there's nothing wrong with it. There are lots of adapters out there to go from pic rail to sling stud, or Anschutz, or vice versa.

I use an M-POD for bench work and load development. I use an Atlas PSR for everything else. I had a couple of Caldwells before and they worked ok too. I really like how easy it is to load a PSR when prone, the non-rotating legs are perfect. Although in hindsight I with I went with the tall model instead of regular.
