Aside from the dead ducks and geese, the danger of course is that such a deadly flu will cross over to a human host and we'll be in the deep pandemic do-do again. These threats usually come from domestic birds in Asian darn it.

I'm taking this from an online birding news group and the author would possibly be furious if he knew it was being shared in a hunting forum, but it's duck and goose hunters that are paying for all the wetland conservation efforts, so what the heck.

"Hi, I was at Mitchell Wetlands today & there are barriers at 2 of the entrances saying the trails are closed. It's confusing because there is nothing official (no official looking signs & no cause apparent - just closed) & the barriers are not at all of the entrances.I wondered along an (open) trail adjacent to the water treatment plant & it was obvious there were many dead canada geese & ducks in the pond. With the other trails blocked off I decided to not bird.In any case, even though some of the trails appear open with no warning barriers, the wetlands are closed."

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

West Perth Wetland Closed Due to Possible Avian Flu

MITCHELL, ON –

The Municipality of West Perth is advising the public that several deceased Canadian geese have been found in the West Perth Wetlands. Testing is currently underway to determine if avian influenza (commonly known as bird flu) is present

Bird Flu does not pass person to person so there is no chance it could result in a pandemic or even an outbreak.

Bird Flu is quite difficult for humans to get, but we can get it if we are in close proximity to infected birds. I'm not sure but I highly doubt a human could get it from a dead duck.

The biggest concern is that when people do get infected, it is highly dangerous with a very high death rate. It is a kind of better safe than sorry sort of thing.

Yes it is rare but the whole point is when a flu does jump species to ours, in the past it's been from either birds or pigs, it can be very deadly because the human body doesn't recognise it and has no antibodies ready. As covid was starting up, there was so much discussion of the Spanish Flu epidemic of 1918 here that I'm sure more discussion here isn't necessary.

Bird flu usually doesn't pass on to humans easily, and when it dies infect a human it usually dies not pass from person to person easily. And usually even then it is not a killer flu. Usually.

But the thing about viruses is that they constantly mutate and there are an almost limitless number of possible variations, like an infinite number of rubiks cube spinning in 6 directions at the same time. So every so often it could happen that there is a one in a trillion mutant that does spread easily within the human population. Or the one in a trillion-trillion mutations that is highly contagious in humans AND also deadly in humans.

Yeah because viruses don't mutate or anything...

Also, from the CDC:
People can become infected after exposure to respiratory droplets, saliva, mucous, or feces that contain virus from infected birds or other animals.

Why can't humans be an "other animal"? Human to human transmission has been reported in other countries before. It's thus far been limited in scope, but all it takes is one lucky mutation for that to all change...

Don't lick dead birds would likely be safe place to start. - dan

Bird flu, cwd, fake news. It’s about limiting rights slowly like boiling a frog based on lies to keep you in your bubble and eating only things with a barcode for the taxes and poisons and your carbon footprint ultimately. But carry on talking about it like it’s as real as covid and climate change. Just more govt. fake news.

Lmao, where have we heard that before?

Pot, meet kettle. Who weaponizes who is the question. You got a pretty big event from about 2020 to current, we forget so soon for the next fake boogie man. Under the carpet the last one is swept. Rinse and repeat. Name a single thing the liars in charge get right? I’ll wait.

People need to read up on the 'Great Influenza Of 1918,' aka 'the Spanish flu.' That killer is believed to have come from pigs but most of the big pandemics later in the century were from birds. I caught one of the last big fatal ones when I was about 20 and people my age died from it.

Hmmm... People jumping to conclusions. The press release states the birds are being tested for bird flu. There are several other possible reasons - bacterial infection in the ponds, poisoning, heat stroke, etc.
