Bird Id help

ruff grouse thumping a log to bring in females. I actually place logs in the bush for them!

Grouse don't thump logs... They like to sit on an elevated perch while drumming, and sometimes the perch is a log. The drumming noise is made by air passing through the stiff flight feathers as the birds compress the air in a scooping action against their puffed chests. The sound carries an amazing distance. The fact that it is called "drumming" confuses people into believing that they are actually beating against an object (log).
