Bird identification?

Agree, especially in photo six where the head is turned exposing the back of the neck. Think it's a mourning dove but, apparently, a large well fed one.

Whatever it was, it was not a dainty little bird.

Seems there is no season for mourning doves in region 2. Too bad. He woulda made a fine lunch...

I dont think thats a mourning dove. I believe it to be a rock dove/pigeon. I shoot many pigeons when my waterfowl season ends and I have seen them come in many different colour configurations. I shot quite a few of them that had the same pale grey colours as seen on mourning doves. The bird pictured is far bigger then any mourning dove i've seen

The beak was all wrong for rock dove, and there was none of the iridescent colors you frequently see on them.

While I've never shot one, I live in the city so I see them almost daily. If I thought it was one of them I'd have shot it on the spot, but to me it was something else entirely.

I'll have to go through my hunting photos to see if I have photos of odd ball pigeons I've shot. I have take many that did not have iridescent feathers. Some were grey and some were brown

Looking at the photos again, the second photo clearly shows the cere above the birds beak which is typical of pigeons and not something found on doves. Also the sixth picture show dark colour underside tail feathers, again typical of pigeons and not of doves. Why do you say the beak was all wrong? Looks right to me.

Not the photos I was after but i figured I'd post these to illustrate that pigeons can come in a variety of pale, non iridescent colour patterns. I'll keep looking through my photos....I'm sure I have some to show plain grey pigeons and pure white ones. I also have a photo somewhere of a pigeon that had the exact colour pattern of a seagull

You shot somebody's Homing pigeon, judging by the band on the leg.

based on habitat, reported size and long-ish skinny beak (for a member of the dove/pigeon family) I'd go with Band-tailed Pigeon. Perhaps a young one without the normal markings of an adult bird as portrayed in field guides

Wasn't this bird coming right for you?

Yup! I contacted the owner, who lived almost 600km away, to let him know not to expect to see his bird anytime soon. He didnt seem to care. In fact, he basically said a homing pigeon that doesnt come home is useless. Fair enough I guess!

Rock doves are not a native species. Thank the pigeon fanciers. ;)

You got that right! I dont mind though....its nice to have something to hunt all year round. Especially with no bag limits. Pigeon hunts are a blast. They are very fast and acrobatic which adds to the challenge. And they decoy better then waterfowl! Usually a slow day of pigeon hunting has more action then a great day of waterfowl hunting. And the birds taste great to boot!

Its on the right side of the road, about a foot away from the foliage. The first two pics are zoomed in versions of two of the last pics.
Still can't see what you are talking about. My eyesight may not be 20/20 but it is still good. Describe exactly where this creature is. Is it ON the road or just off the road. Surely I'm not the only one who can't make this out.
