birdshot in a rifle barrel

No harm. Patterns will open rapidly. Shot capsules may give better results than crimped shells.
 
As long as it's lead shot you're fine.Won't hurt your barrel,the only thing is about your pattern: from a rifled barrel you get a sort of a star pattern,so there might be holes on the OD of the pattern.
 
Lead won't be a problem, but as stated before, you'll have a wonky pattern.

I've done it and you'll get a donut pattern with a really scared but still very much alive gopher in the middle. The rifling spins it and centrifugal force pulls the pellets out.
 
I've used effectively on birds when out Moose hunting using .45 and .50 cal. cartridge rifles, very much like a .410 but not as good patterning ,but great at close range.

If you are talking a rem 870 this is a response I saved when another member asked the manufacturer.

Yes, you can safely shoot birdshot through your rifled barrel;
however, expect a very poor pattern since the rifling will
put "spin" on the wad/shot charge resulting in flyers and a blown
pattern. Also the spin & sharp edges will break down the wad prematurely and result in excessive build up of lead and plastic in the barrel over a short period of time which may prove difficult to remove.
