The CBC website has posted a series of photos on its website sub-headed "Independence and Conflict". I post the link here because among the photos are a number that show the weapons used by both sides in the conflict - LE, Mauser, and more.

The Jewish army back then was a rag tag guerrilla force. They used anything they could get their hands on from the black surplus arms market to scrap yards in Palestine. They actually salvaged 3 Sherman tanks from discarded parts left by the Brit army, fished tank & MG rounds dumped by the Brit out of the Mediterranean Ocean and restored a crashed Egyptian Spitfire back to fighting condition. Although totally out gunned and out manned, the Jews went on to kick the Arab's a$$ and established an independent State of Israel. The pathetic Iranians don't know who they are messing with.

One Brit defected with his Cromwell tank to be with his jewish girlfriend if I recall, they certainly were a mixed bunch, many of the jewish factions hated each other, but put their issues aside during the fighting. A major Arab leader gave a speech at the UN shortly before this, saying "We will drive the jews into the sea" guess that plan did not work out so well. Had the Palestianan stayed put the Israelis would have much more problems than they have now.
