October was a terrific month for myself...... Spent much of it in Saskatchewan with a pal hunting birds.

I took along 4 SxS shotguns , one of which was my trusty 16bore LC Smith. Last summer I made my first ever shotshells, using #5 bismuth shot. I had really missed using my LC on ducks and decided to spend the $ on a loader and bismuth so once again I could do my duck hunting with my pet shotgun.

The loads were provided to me by the kindness of Will Bilozar, who also sold me the components to make this ammo.

I can tell you that few ducks were safe when they came into range and I have some terrific meals to be enjoyed this coming winter. That #5 shot really brought down the birds...... I couldn't be happier!!! :)

Thanks for your help, Will ....... And cheers to all the SxS enthusiasts on the board.

PS this photo was taken after a pleasant morning we enjoyed collecting quackers ... in S. Saskatchewan (The bonus was a flock of snow geese that came into range on my side of the blind. After letting the first bunch go because they seemed a bit far, I swung on a big white bird in the second flock, it dropped dead like a stone and to my surprise, a big blue fell just behind..... 2 for 1 with the 16 gauge!)

Here's Drake retrieving a Snow ....... Yes, there's a black Lab behind those feathers. He's my pal's new buddy ...... Just 1 year old and already retrieving like a pro!!!!

Happy Hunting,

Lucky

Its too bad that Bismuth is not so easy to get in factory loads as it was a few years ago.It is the best of the nontoxic shot in my opinion. My next favourite is Tungesten Matrix.

Outstanding!
I love seeing the old SXS's in the field, and Bismuth and Nice shot is the easiest, best way to keep theese old guns working!
I load most of mine with FFG as well....

We have to get you rolling your own especially a 28ga guy. Nothing like it. I wish the bismuth shot was better priced and easier to source in canada

That little LC Smith 16 seems to fit me like a dream...... I have never shot so well with any other gun. Photo is the result of 1 (lucky) round of old Imperial 6 shot from the IC barrel. When 3 birds fell, I didn't shoot again...... My jaw dropped..... and when I picked up the birds, had to take this photo to mark the occasion!

always interested in hunting stories - wonderful picture of the snows! And good to see you are getting your 16 back out in the field. I shoot several 16's and with bismuth or TM they are a joy to hunt waterfowl with.

October Goose shooting

OK.... since I have 1 request ( :)))) ) more photos and some goose stories.

Before I begin, I might add that most of our geese were taken with 12ga shotguns. I was shooting 2 different BSS brownings and my pal uses his Beretta O/U . All guns were chambered in 3" which I reccommend for most pass shooting, but on a few occasions we managed to find some shoots where the geese were giving us 20 to 30 yard ranges, so 2-3/4" 4's were perfect.

I mainly shot 3" KENT steel BB loads in 1-3/8 oz. 1300fps . That ammo travels about the same speed as my old lead 3" used to, so my leads were very similar. I also rolled my own Bismuth 3" , #2 and BB. At the cost of near $4.00/ round I honestly didn't shoot it that much. Wallet seizure struck after I realized I could hit or miss using that $$$$$ bismuth at about the same ratio as the Kent Steel. So this season, we spent more time looking for the perfect shooting situations, where the birds would fly past us at more suitable ranges.

At the end of the trip, we had 118 snows and 17 white fronts all deboned, with 1 wing attached, and vacuum packed in pairs..... stacked in the freezer. My share has been turned into the most amazing breakfast sausage that I have ever eaten! good memories of the hunt with each package and some to share with friends and family too.

Here are some more photos... (also a bunch in the hunting category .. pictures without the kill . http://www.canadiangunnutz.com/forum/showthread.php?712043-The-Best-Pictures-From-Hunting-Without-the-Kill/page22

All the best,

Lucky

dog/man/gun ... Saskatchewan... FUN!

Looks like you got a good share of our abundant birds, glad you enjoyed the hunt!
I love your photography, you did a great job of capturing the wonderful fall light in Saskatchewan.
Especially love the photos of the overhead snows in flight. Do you mind sharing your technique? filters, settings etc?

Thank You Longwalker ...... I enjoy shooting the shotgun and my Canon 7D almost equally.
Most of the photos were taken with my wide angle lens which is a 3.5 -5.6 , 10-22 mm Canon..... However Those overhead shots, and a few of the other goose cluster images were taken using my Canon 100-400 IS lens and its quite new to me. The real key was the light conditions that morning. The sunrise was brilliant, the geese were abundant , and I shot hundereds of images during the 1st hour of daylight. The morning sun gave me enough light to capture the birds flying and illuminate them. exif on those overhead shots is ( Canon EOS 7D 235 mm f/4.5 1/750 sec 250 ISO ) That was a very opportune morning for photography. Living on Vancouver Island, low light levels and cloud, cloud cloud, really makes me appreciate those beautiful Prairie Skies....
