Just wanted to say,hi.First time posting on the milsurp board and i just got a beauty today in the mail.I got a P17 that has not been bubbad with .Has full wood and still has bayonet lug on it.This an amazing rifle still working out if it is all original or not.Seems the wood but be from a p17 not sure.It has the RE mark which means remington made.Still working on the rest.Looks like i have a new hobby perhaps. Will and try to post pics but suck at it.Going to take it hunting next week

can they just be shot with taking it to a gunsmith.barrel need to be cleaned but rifling tools great and no pits that i can see.as for weight i do not find it that bad

It's a heavy old brute but it WILL put Bambi down for keeps.

Welcome to the addiction!

.

Depends on how old he is smellie. When I was 50, the P14/17 felt light as feathers. Over that last decade, it's amazing how much weight the rifles and I put on.

P-17 is one of the most rugged and reliable rifles ever made, anywhere, anywhen.

The iron sights are calibrated for .30-'06 ammunition using a 150-grain bullet at about 2800 ft/sec. Nowadays, the cheapest .30-'06 ammo is close to this. The cheap stuff even has flat-based bullets, which the 5-L Enfield rifling of the rifle REALLY prefers.

Clean out the barrel and the chamber, dry it carefully, run a few rounds through her and you're ready for Bambi.

Any problems, check back here; someone is bound to help out.

Have fun!

i am 47 and i do not sit at a desk so i find things lighter than other people.will post pics later of the gun and i can get some history on it.Had before a lee enfeild converted to shoot 308 but i sold it but i really like it how it handled wish i kept it but needed the money.might have to find another,is was nothing special not a dcra or anything like that

sorry it was p14 not p17 wishful thinking on my part sorry about that,P17 is on my list now,any one have one.thanks for the info though smellie will apply to all of my guns

i got a p14 and p17 they are a very nice looking rife, unfortunately my p14 is drilled and stock cut but still looks nice and my p17 is full wood but pitted in 3 spots :( but i clean her up and the stock covers up most of the pitting on it expect the small bit on the bolt handle, i was going to sell my p17 but i think my mom going to kill me if i do haha she was little mad when i said i was selling in haha she might be buying me a k98 for xmas :)
hopefully next week ill get to take both rifle out to shoot and see what one is a better shooter and hopefully noting will blow up in my face haha but you made one mistake after u buy one mil surplus you can not stop :)

Sorry if I sound like mr smarty pants, but small correction: P14, for "pattern", and M1917, for "Model". I also love these rifles, refurbed a few P14 and kept one of them; it took me a while to find a nice '17 to keep her company. Probably my favorite type of peep sight / front sight combination of all my rifles. Happy shooting!

Good correction. You're absolutely right.
