Hi all, i am looking for help finding a black rifle in the 7.62x39 round. that will not break the bank... any suggestions?

The only things that are below 1k are the Mini 30 (about $1000, mags are expensive), CZ 858 ($700, comes with 4 mags and a bunch of other stuff :D) and the SKS (200, more of a milsurp rifle... great fun but not as tacticool as the 858 :p).

Cz.

It is the firearm equivalent of Linux:
Inexpensive.
Robust.
Gets the job done.

And plenty of people are making parts for it. With the modern dressing manufactured and available right here in Canada from NEIT and NEA, the question is no longer "why?" but "why not?"

Umm...Colassal forgot to mention that his is a TNW 7.62x39 upper (that he got from Marstar) mated to a BlueLine AR15 lower ...

Yep I second the CZ, but don't forget about the SKS, you can just dress it up and you've got yourself a black-red rifle for about $400

I have both a mini-30 as well as a cz 858.
A few things about the minis that i have heard/read or experienced. mostly from forums down in the states, many of which have a serious hate-on for ruger.
-they do not like surplus ammo ( or so i have heard) the primers can bend/break firing pins ( once again, never had an issue)
- while not difficult to clean, they can be time consuming, especially scraping all that s**t off around the piston.
-i haven't had a chance to compare accuracy to the cz. to cold as of late, but the mini patterns like a shotgun with no choke. needs a barrel strut and a decent low power scope, be prepared for the mini to bash the ever living god fearing... out of whatever scope you put on it.
-mags can be hard to find, and can be difficult to remove/insert into the rifle.
-scope ring retaining screws can rattle loose. use nail polish. clear, not pink.
-not as tacticool as some of the other black rifles out there.
-trigger is a robust 8 pounds... but no creep!
-ejects brass far enough away to make range visits very exciting! it leaves at roughly mach 2 and promptly bounces off every available surface until resting comfortably down your shirt/jeans. Everytime. About ten feet left and 8 feet high.
All this said, I've only had my mini jam on me once, and that was my fault. piston locked up tight. With the mini, there is a cut-out in the receiver that allows you to view if the hammer is up or down. a quick check confirmed the hammer was up, and a boot stomp to the charging handle of the rifle (muzzle point away from anything, no live round in chamber) released the spent cartridge. Its roughly a bit heavier than my 858,.
I think i paid around $800 for mine (this was month before the price of them jumped another 200).
Would I buy another? No. but it is a great little gopher getter.
The xcr looks very interesting in 7.62x 39....but......
I'd go with a CZ, it was made to fire all the SB corrosive ammo that we have here in Canada, lots of parts and upgrades, less expensive, easier to find mags, and easy, easy, easy to take apart. Hope this helps, good luck.

My Mini 30 works fine. Some of them might need some tweaking, but some of them just want to shoot. I just did a trigger job on mine. It now breaks clean @ 3.5lbs with very little creep. Just did a 200 rd torture test with Czech Surplus. Only 3 rds didn't fire because of light primer strike. Other wise every round fed, fired, extracted and ejected. All this on an older series 189 with standard sights, no scope. I got 2 to 4MOA with Czech surplus @ 100yds with the irons on a bench. Not bad! Can't wait to scope it and tune some real good loads.

My advise is not to install the heavier hammer spring. This will help break the firing pin. Firing pins at this time can only be had through returning the gun back to Ruger. Doing a trigger job and polishing the hammer helped it.
Fun gun to shoot. YMMV

thanks guys, I think i'm gonna go with the czech small arms carbine with 11.75'' barrel, from wolverine supply. i'll probably throw on a the fab ar style stock.. and a shell deflecting scope mount...
