I will be holding a Black Badge Course April 13/14 in Taber, Alberta. Cost is $250 which includes your first year IPSC Alberta membership, your first match fee, books, lunch both days and 2 days of instruction. To take the course you will need a firearm 9 x 19 or larger, 4 mags (5 preferred), a holster, mag holders, belts, safety glasses, ear protection and 500 rounds of ammunition. You will be on the range for 2 days about 8 hours or more a day. There is a 100 question open book exam that I get you to do before the course as the exam takes about 3 hours. If you are interested I ask for a $100 deposit to hold a spot for you.

I still have room in this course. If you are thinking of doing a BB course you might want to consider grabbing a spot. Once summer comes there will not be that many courses to choose from.

How much experience is required before taking the BB class? I'm just waiting for my pistol transfer to go through. My original plan was to take this year to get some good practice in before taking the BB next year. Is that going to be sufficient?

Personally i prefer that the shooter comes to me with no experience as the majority come with bad habits from watching to many movies and no lessons. i then have to spend a large amount of time breaking bad habits. I only request that you know how your gun operates and that you have it sighted in for 25 yards. If you are going to wait awhile at least get some lessons from a competent instructor and not your buddy! Worse case scenerio was it took 750 rounds for me to break the buddies shooting lesson so the fellow could hit the target.

Just my opinion, but you don't really need any experience to take the BB course as long as you are proficient operating your firearm with regard to the safety, decocker (if it has one), etc. If you practice drawing from a holster, changing magazines, etc, you may be teaching yourself bad habits that will be harder to unlearn.

I didn't think about the potential for picking up bad habits. Once my pistol shows up and I have a bit of break in time with it to get the handling down I'll look into finding a course in Calgary to take this summer.

Thanks for the info!
