Can someone give me some detailed info on the black badge course that allows you to wear a holster???

My range is offering it and I'm considering it, but the price is a little steep (around $160 for the course and I'm told around $150 in ammo).

- What I really want to know is what am I going to be learning?
- Is this just another safety course slanted to holster usage?
- Am I going to learn any actual skills?
- Are there any tangible benefits besides being able to wear a holster at the range?
- Why do I need 400 rds of ammo?
- Can I take it with a 22LR pistol?

Any info you can provide would be appreciated.

I shouldn't read too much into a simple posting, but from your questions, I think you should pass on the course.

It's not a Holster course (although use of a holster is a component of the course) You need it to shoot sanctioned IPSC matches.

If all you want is some type of holster training...the BB course would be overkill.

You will learn some valuable shooting skills...you'll need at least 400 rounds (more like 600) and no 22's (min caliber is 9 mil)

Cheers

first of all ,all the mandatory knowledge about the ''must & dont''' regarding mandatory IPSC security rules , wich can make the difference between ''ranked'' and ''disqualified''' realy fast.

techniques , marksmanship , racing the clock at the same time...
- Is this just another safety course slanted to holster usage?

mandatory gesture at the firing line and out, ''the must and dont '' wich can make a difference in how it end.... ranked and disqualified
- Am I going to learn any actual skills?

this. skills can be refined, bad habits are glued forever .
- Are there any tangible benefits besides being able to wear a holster at the range?

cant sport a holster at any range any time. only at an approved ipsc range and during ipsick practice events...excepting leo's who may have their rigs if allowed.
- Why do I need 400 rds of ammo?

in case you're so bad you need as much practice in order to not fail the whole course..lolol
- Can I take it with a 22LR pistol?

no.

The Black Badge course is one of the toughest safety courss you are ever going to encounter. The course will teach you safe gunhandling to the point it will become second nature and you will no longer have to think about it It will also improve your shooting as their is an accuracy requirement as well as a time requirement you must meet.That is the reason for the high rd count You don't move on till you meet the standards of the previous excerise. Will you become a safer and better shooter if you finish the course?? YES. Will you have fun taking this course?? Depending on your instructor?? If I am your instructor ? YES Is this course for everyone??? NO . 9x19 is the smallest caliber allowed

You would learn gunhandling skills.

IPSC is the acronym for the International Practical Shooting Confederation. IPSC is a dynamic shooting sport where the principles of Accuracy, Speed and Power are balanced in a unique scoring system. IPSC has defined Action Shooting. It requires competitors to shoot fast and accurately, often shooting on the move and developing techniques and styles to shave off fractions of a second between shots, during reloads and drawing from the holster. IPSC Canada is the governing body for our sport in Canada.

Training

The IPSC Canada National Training program, or as it is better known as the “Black Badge” course. The course is used to train competitors in our sport and give them the basic skills necessary to participate in IPSC competitions. A manual is provided to assist the students and will be used as a reference throughout the course.

The Black Badge course teaches a combination of safety, proficiency, and understanding of the rules. The progression of skills will be learned by:

* Reading the materials that are provided with this course.
* Observing techniques demonstrated by the instructor.
* Doing the techniques under the close supervision of the instructor.

The emphasis of the Black Badge course is safety. Recognizing this, many other clubs and organizations use the Black Badge course as their standard for training or in lieu of their own training program.

The Black Badge course contains both a theoretical and practical component. Students should expect to spend up to 8 hours in a classroom environment. Here, they will learn the safety procedures involved when moving with a firearm, reloading under time pressure and drawing from a holster. They will learn the rules of the game and practice all of these under cold conditions (unloaded firearms and magazines) before proceeding with the Practical part of the course.

A full day is spent on the range, where students will practice the skills needed for IPSC style competitions. These include (but are not limited to):

* Drawing from a holster
* Reloading
* Reloading on the move
* Moving with a firearm
* Shooting strong and weak handed
* Shooting from various positions

Both new and experienced targets shooters are welcome. This course will demonstrate all of the necessary skills to shoot an IPSC Course of fire safely and accurately. Upon completion of the course the students will be very safe and sufficiently proficient to allow them to compete in competitions at local clubs and at Provincial and National events. They will be known as qualified IPSC competitors and are entitled to a certificate, a numbered “Black Badge” and to participate in all sanctioned IPSC events.

All instructors must be current IPSC Canada members and listed as an instructor with the NTO. All students must join IPSC Canada in order to take the course, qualify and receive an IPSC Canada Black Badge. Students will be provided with a current Rule Book and must pay all of the necessary course and membership fees.
