This past weekend, I had the luck and privilege of taking my Blackbadge course with Joey Tolentino, at the WRAS range in Spruce Grove, Ab.

This was my first formal training of any kind, and I went into it, not knowing for sure what I would accomplish or if my current skill level was good enough to even pass the course.
From first contact Joey was helpful, polite and easy to talk to.
The course was an amazing experience for me.
My confidence, ability and familiarity with IPSC has grown a few hundred percent thru his careful instruction and mentoring.

Safety was number one at all times, and there were zero instances where I felt like I was not being watched over and watched for 100%. My classmates were all from assorted backgrounds and we all had varying skill levels, but no one was excluded, and Joey really great about making sure that everyone understood what was going to happen, why things are done this way, and how this will improve us as shooters.

The weather varied over the two days from snow and blistering cold, to me getting a sunburn (go figure) but spirits were high all weekend, as it would be pretty impossible to be upset with the amount of energy Joey brought to each lesson.

Personally, I saw changes and improvements in my skills by the morning of day 2, but I saw changes in my attitude and way of thinking of the actions by noon on day one.
Every bullet found its home, and as we progressed thru the course, it just got more fun with each shot!

I can't speak highly enough of Joey, and simply had to share with the fellow cgn-ers about how great the course was!

Since we are not allowed to hotlink, joeytolentino.com is his website, he has another black badge course coming in June, but he also does 1 on 1 training, and additional pistol courses.

The man is a wealth of knowledge, and for anyone wanting to get into action shooting, I really recommend getting in touch with Joey. I plan on going back to him for his intermediate class and advanced eventually when I can keep up! lol

His love of the sport is contagious, so be warned!
I am a better shooter because of this class, and feel like I was very lucky to get started on such a great note!
I have been fixed of my bad self taught habits and returning to the range yesterday, I noticed a vast improvement in my groups, and speed.

Also, finishing off the class with each of us hitting a target 150ft away was a damn cool graduation present!

Feel free to PM me if you want more info about the class or anything!
Also, to the WRAS shooters I got to see and meet, thank you for your hospitality and friendliness!
You have a great facility, and its obvious to anyone who spends 5 minutes there that the range is well cared for by its members, and safety is at the front of everyone's mind!

Joey is a BB instructor?! What's this world coming to!?

Seriously, I am not at all surprised by the positive report. Joey is a huge asset to IPSC AB, and an outstanding human.

Don't think that way; you'll do fine. Which will be your first match? What Division will you be shooting in?

The BB is an excellent course. I'm glad to hear we have more shooters in AB. Don't tell Joey I said this, but he is a pretty good teacher too! I learned stuff and I wasn't even a student, when I helped him and Walter with a course.

I am thinking I should just stick with production for now, the gear will come, but want to focus on the skills themselves.
Although it will be a shame getting rid of the over-sized mag release and slide lock that the previous owner installed on the glock 17 gen2 I got.
Not looking for setting any records, even participating at a walking speed is alot more fun the just sitting in a static range all day!
I work a month of nights, a month of days ect, so I am really hoping to squeeze into the June 7th or 8th, atleast its only a 2 hour drive that way.

Still have a heck of a lot to learn and practice until then, but feeling like I have a great foundation to build on!

Don't worry about getting DQ'd, we just be safe and have fun. If you get DQ'd just come to the next one. If it happens again take a good look at how you're doing stuff but don't freak out. There are very few who haven't been done at a match, and as we say, it's not if but when.
Also don't think of Production as being a division that isn't competitive, some of the best shooters in the world are in Production and their hit factors are right up there with Open, contrary to what many would think. Of course if you want to change divisions that's cool, but don't feel that Production is where the new shooter must start or that people will look down on you for shooting it, maybe once, but not anymore.
Hoping to see you at the nationals....

Thanks Curmudgeon!
Look forward to seeing you and many others out there,
Now to get in my first one and not get Dq'd! lol

Just do everything Joey taught you and told you to do and you will be just fine.
You'll find you'll actually enjoy yourself and have a great time at that first match.

At our AB matches be sure to identify yourself as a "first match" shooter.
We typically try to match you up with a senior/experienced shooter for the match as a "mentor" to help you through it and guide you.

Welcome to IPSC AB.
