Ok.

While I wouldn't mind getting into IPSC I've never bothered ... and I'm not sure if I have the time/funds to get all hardcore now either ... but I'm getting paperwork done to join GRGC and the rules say I can't go downrange or use the IPSC ranges without a BB.

So... what's the minumum gear req'd to successfully complete the BB course and how often are they offered?

I'm mainly interested in the ability to use the IPSC pits at GRGC for pistol targetty goodness... which a BB will allow.

Then... I might actually get into IPSC (if my XD is still standard?)

I did mine in October, so I'm still a newbie...all opinions that I give should be taken with a grain of salt.

Belt (Duty, CR etc) with a velcro inner belt (look on eBay)
Holster (Fobus is CHEAP in all ways. Blade-tech, etc)
Mag pouches. 4 is good

I have yet to do my second competition, so like I said, don't take this as gospel...I know what a fan you are of gospel:D :D

At GRGC you'll find something else happens. Once you get your black badge your #### won't stink.

When I belonged there I expressed interest in a black badge for the same reasons and I was bluntly told that I couldn't take the course unless I intended to shoot the matches. I was also told my wheel gun, holster and speedloaders weren't adequate.

This was all a few years ago and perhaps some attitudes of have changed. But it was the retroactive changing of the rules regarding the IPSC range that caused me to seek more welcoming ranges than Guelph and they weren't hard to find.

Hmm.... I hope so. I used to be a member at BRRC... and besides the fact that it was increasingly busy with disciplines and matches when you could actually get in to shoot it was usually unmolested. The problem was its 50yds only and 1+ hours away.

I can't help but think that a 10-15 minute drive to the range is a good motivator to grab the guns and some ammo and go over for an hour or two...

The same trip to BRRC would make 1 hour of range time a 3 hour affair.

I can't understand why ranges all seem to have cliques... #### people... its shooting. And while someone might find Cowboy a little queer I'm sure there's plenty of folks that find IPSC a little queer.

I assume it's the same across canada but reading my BC ipsc book yesterday it said you have to shoot 2 matches a year to keep the black badge.

so you might have to shoot some matches to keep using that range section.

In BC, you need 2 sanctioned matches per year to maintain your IPSC BC Classification. That is an IPSC BC requirement, not necessarily your range requirement. Your range may simply require that you are Black Badge Certified, regardless of how long ago you were a member of IPSC in your Province.

Contact Quigley here - he's the IPSC Ontario head honcho - he'll point you to where you can get the course soon. I belive there is a sign up sheet on Ontario's web site.

Minimum equipment is a belt style holster that covers the trigger guard, mag and 3 pouches. (although you might want more)

Your XD, if not modified will qualifiy in production and you can also shoot it in Standard.

For the next Black Badge courses in Ontario check here;

http://www.ipsc-ont.org/bbcourse.htm

Ask around at GRGC, if there is enough interest they will usually try and schedule one there with one of the instructors if none of these dates are convenient.

To get started you need a simple holster mounted on a belt that passes through at least three loops of your pants, mag holders and 4 mags so you are not running back all the time to reload. Your XD would be more than fine. There will be plenty of people saying you need X or Y to become competitive, but if that is not your goal, simply tune this part out.

When you finish your BB course, you only have provisional status. You will need to successfully compete in at least one sanctioned match to become a full black badge holder. But this is no biggy, and GRGC is hosting several matches this summer.

I did mine with a norinco Tokarev, a cheap holster (that covered the triggerguard), a belt looped through the pants and 3 mags. Two in a side pouch, and one in my back pocket.

Speed is NOT required for BB training, safety is.

there are time req. for a few disciplines...

your xd is now a production gun ;) welcome to the dark side...

re equipment - like others said above, something that goes through at least 3 belt loops which keeps your holster and mag pouches on your belt... 4 mags will be fine for the course exercises. I think you only need 2 mag pouches (or 1 double mag) for the course, obviously more for matches... Beyond that, the standard is 500-1000 rounds of ammo... get whatever holster will fit your gun, don't bother with 'speed' holsters. if you want to spend money on something better quality, get good mag pouches (like the CR Speed, for example). you don't have to equip your whole belt with them, buy 1-2 to start, and have regular mag pouches behind them - or just stick to plain old fashioned mag pouches until after the course. Up to you...

Re courses - I would recommend the Burlington/Wentworth course, there is still space there, and Al/Dave are great instructors. Plus, shooting is split across two Sundays, so if you find yourself running into problems on the first day of shooting, you'll have a week to relax, practice, etc, before you try again. Plus, if you have a family, it won't keep you away from them for a whole weekend (which might generate political problems at home, haha).

ohhh, I just noticed, that course is not on the list/schedule. Lecture at Burlington evening Sat Apr 15th, shooting at Wentworth (Hamilton) Sun 16th and Sun 23rd. If interested, PM me and I'll give you the contact email address.

Re the Guelph club: some people I really like are based out of there, some people I really dislike are based out of there, it's a mix. I guess, unfortunately, the latters seem to be more visible and more 'in charge', so you just need to find a different club, I guess. Or, just get your BB, and use that club only for practice/etc - you don't need anyone there for that. Then shoot your matches around the whole of GTA, and the attitude of the people at Guelph won't make any difference.

as you progress through and get sign off on the drills, time is a factor for almost all of them. if you cannot complete the drills (with sufficient accuracy. Eg. for us it was if you got 1 "D" or a miss, then 50% => had to be "A"s ) if you did not complete the drills in the time alloted (you were given several attempts) then you would not pass (no one failed, but we did have quite a few people who had to repeat drills at the end of the class, until they passed them.)

Hey Demented...

Most of your questions look to have been addressed, but I'll try and fill in the blanks...

First off, I would recommend that you use the online form to get the ball rolling...

http://www.ipsc-ont.org/bb_app.htm

It gives the instrcutors an indication of overall interst in that area and they will then schedule a course

It will be listed here http://www.ipsc-ont.org/bbcourse.htm

In addition...I would check out the list of clubs http://www.ipsc-ont.org/clubs.htm . Pick a few in your area and email the club reps to see if there is a BB in the planning. They usually start the process, get the word out and list interested particpants prior to it ending up on the IPSC Ontario website.

The first two links on this page would also be worth reading http://www.ipsc-ont.org/training.htm

This is the time of year when the Instructors like to get busy (before the ranges dry up:cool: ) so you shouldn't have any problems finding one...especially if you're willing to drive a bit.

I'm pretty sure that Wentworth (Hamilton) will be putting a course on soon...

Let me know how you make out...or if you have any additional questions

Cheers

My XD40 Tactical, belt, holster, and mag pouches were less than $1000.00 in 2003. I am still using my Stock XD40 in the Production division...and won my last match with it.

Enjoy and have fun with it.

Go for it Demented.

I can't imagine any shooter not enjoying this sport.

I am in my third year and still can't sleep the night before a match.

Not many things get my fat 35 yr old carcass that excited anymore.

As for #######s, they are in every discipline and can only be avoided or tolerated. Maybe kicked when no one is looking.

best, and good shooting whatever you decide,

V7
