Just heard an off-duty RCMP officer was mauled by a bear near 10 mile lake today.

"he was running with his dogs and they went into the bush. He heard them yelp and then they came running abck with a bear right behind them. The bear turned and began attacking him. He fought it off, but got cut up pretty good"

(information direct from another Quesnel RCMP officer)

This is all I have seen, from News 1130

Banff cyclist mauled by bear was first chased down on his bike by bruin
14, 2006 - 2:45 pm
BANFF, Alta. (CP) - A cyclist mauled by a black bear on a mountain trail near this Rocky Mountain resort town was hunted down on his bike by the predatory bruin, the park's chief warden said Sunday.
"We heard he had been chased on the bicycle for a while," said Ian Syme.
"We're not sure how far that was. Certainly at the time when you are chased like that things can seem to be a lot longer than they might be, but apparently he was chased."
Greg Flaaten was airlifted to hospital in Calgary after the Friday night attack.
Syme said Flaaten was to undergo surgery.
"He had significant damage to tricep and bicep. I understand he probably had a broken scapula as well," he said.
"I think the big factor here is the artery that runs into the arm was not injured and therefore circulation to his lower arm is still happening.
"They're doing reconstructive surgery on the bicep-tricep area."
Family of the 41-year-old mountain biker could not be reached for comment.
It's believed he was mauled over a prolonged period on the heavily wooded Hoodoos-Bow River Trail east of the Banff townsite.
He was found around 8 p.m. by two other cyclists, who stopped when they spotted a bike and a broken helmet near the trail and then heard the victim calling for help.
Robert Earl said once he and fellow cyclist Robin Borstmayer realized the bear was between them and the victim, they knew they couldn't rescue him alone.
The pedalled to a nearby campground and called a park warden, who was dispatched along with an RCMP officer.
When they arrived, the bear was still pacing near Flaaten and refused to leave, forcing the warden to shoot it dead.
Syme said it's rare to see such a predatory attack, adding that 95 per cent of the time the bear runs away and if it attacks, it's doing so to protect itself or its cubs.
He estimated the bear weighed only about 63 kilograms - much less than the weight of a normal, healthy bear.
Flaaten was found a short distance from his bike, and there were dragging marks and signs of a struggle.
Syme said they haven't spoken to him yet and are waiting for test results on the bear to come back.
Flaaten was wearing headphones at the time of the attack.
Last June, 35-year-old Isabelle Dube was killed by a grizzly while she and some friends were out jogging while on a hiking trail.

yeah - i've heard the RCMP attack from a confirmed source, so it's a definate. Apperently the guy got beat up pretty bad, but the dogs drove the bear off and the guy managed to drive himself to hospital.

I believe that's 3 attacks in a week or so. That 200 dollar maverick short barreled shotgun is looking pretty good right now :)

(PS - If you're in the woods in bc, don't shoot bone collector. Admittedly, he LOOKS like a bear, but he isn't technically and you'll just honk him off which is never a good idea.)

they said the bear was defending young on cbc radio so the bear will live

why should they destory the bear (thus destory 3 bears), just because she was doing what comes natural to her, protecting her young. its not like the bear is a man eater.

the fact he is alive means the bear wasnt all that hungry. maybe it ate the cops donuts and got full?

Rare to see a black bear defend it's young like that - especially when there's dogs about. But then we don't know the whole story or the details, so it's hard to say.

And the guy's not dead becuase the dogs came to is aid, not because the bear backed off on her own.

But - i guess if the cop who actually got attacked feels that given the circumstances the bear isn't a threat, i guess that's good enough. Odd number of cases of 'black bears defending their young' this year tho... the fact is normally they just don't. I hope that's the case tho - and it wasn't teaching them to hunt.

hey maybe we can have a go at getting the pitbull ban here lifted and use pit bulls as a new form of bear defence?

Pretty common for Bears to chase "pets" back to thier owners.....the Guy most likely got mauled cause the bear was surprised when it came upon him
Alot of our Backwoods Parks recommend leaving Fido behind for just this reason ;)
Glad the guy lived:)
Maybe we should up the Bag Limit here to 3 a year :D

And not charge over twenty bucks for a black bear tag!

The ministry wants to remove a greater number of black bears through hunting yet they charge over twenty bucks for a bear tag. I think we should be allowed to take 1 or 2 on our general licence at no extra charge.
