Black bear caliber

Brad, you seem to be implying that Charming Chuck is somehow singling you out for harassment or ridicule. I would respectfully submit that this notion is somewhat unrealistic.

In reality, he seems to act this way in just about every thread he visits.

Not everyone needs to have a photo op after taking an animal!
This is true, but i have seen superbrad call others out on for pictures multiple occasions. Im sure he has a pic or two, hes posted other hunting photos of coyotes, wolves and a turkey, surely he took a photo of at least one bear, or the elk he took down in colorado he was talking about in the 7mm thread, or from helicopter hog hunting?

Black bears grow big wherever they have the food resources and the necessary cover and habitat to not be seen too often, especially by bear hunters with bear tags. And a short bear season will only help to grow big bears, too. BC has a very generous bear season, about 6 months of open season per year. Which is probably one of the reason BC gets plenty of big bears, but the true monsters usually end up taken elsewhere.

BC has a huge percentage of North Americas black bears. So it's easy to see there may be many larger ones.

Many BC bears have access to salmon runs, even inland as the salmon can go pretty far from the coast. So in general, if you are looking for a 6ft bear, much of southern and coastal BC is a good place to be. But bears also prey upon moose and deer quite heavily, more so than most people realize. It's one of the reasons that Alaska has a very generous balck bear season with few restrictions in some zones. And while salmon is great, it's not required to make a big bear, it's not the only food that makes bears big.

it's not terribly difficult to find a 6ft bear in BC, and I've killed one that was close to 7ft, and personally know of a few other genuine 7ft bears killed. And there has been bigger, too. In coastal areas where there are few and short hibernation periods, grizzlies, bears can get very large. I can go out any spring and kill a 6ft bear within a couple of days of hunting spot and stalk. Or more accurately- F250 spot and stalk. :)

Biggest black bear I ever saw- a true monster- I cam across while hunting grouse with my GF and I had a O/U 20ga with #6 shot. It actually got a bit scary for a bit, as he stalked us for some time, just off the trail we were on.

So I would say in general, getting a good size bear in BC is not an insurmountable task- black bear hunting in much of BC is really, really good.

That giant in Manitoba got so big because he stayed away from hunters in bear season and had a good food source. Like I say, big bears can show up anywhere, they just need the right habitat.

Did you guys even watch Jurassic park? The only way to stop a t-Rex is with a bigger dinosaur... Or a bunch of smaller ones... in conclusion the best black bear round is an Albertosaurus.

Whatever interests me at the time. I've killed them with everything from a .223 to 375 Ruger, and used shotguns too. :)

44 mag always been my caliber of choice for black bear, some are big. Next year i will be able to use my Big Horn Armory 500 S&W ( ETA 02/18 ), the big thumper should be very potent... JP.

I'm a fan of my plain old boring 30-06. Kills things dead lol. From Deer to Moose to Bear nothing has moved very far with a well placed shot. Still waiting on my Elk but that's a whole other story.

223 head shot ?
For shotgun what did you use ? Slug or buckshot ?

Lung shots with the .223 and Barnes bullets. Not varmit bullets, they wouldn't be an ideal choice.

Shotguns I've mostly used buckshot on bears that were a problem. Buckshot is great for close to houses or a bear up in a tree etc. Buckshot is a poor killer of bears as range increases/pattern disperses though. Assuming close range, a headshot will kill well, as will a lung shot at very close range. I shot a black bear int he lungs broadside at about 3 yards with a modified choke, he ran and then died. Similarly, I have shot bears in the head at a similar distances and they died quick. But a giant black bear at about 25 yards soaked up several rounds of buckshot body shots from an open cylinder choked shotgun, and it wasn't until I moved in real close and hammered him again that he stopped getting up.

That must be a good 30-06, because most of our 30-06 rifles will kill what the bullet hits, but to kill them dead is a whole different thing!
