20-30 yds over a bait in sandilands use a bow , 30/30 or a 12ga with slugs my mushroom picking gun is a Winchester defender 12 ga, I do not need some yogi sniffing my butt while picking berries and mushrooms

Marlin 1895G in 45-70 or 444 Marlin.
This will do in any situation up to 200 yards and more, if you know your gun and know how to use your sight.

I got a nice black bear last year with my 444 Marlin, fell right where I shot it. I was using handloaded 300gr SP bullets over 45gr of Reloader 7. Love my 444!

how is 7.62x39 surplus m43 ball ammo for bear?

Not for hunting, just for defence. Say I get encroached by a bear in the bush while deer hunting or sumtin. Like I said for defence so range would be within 25 yards. Think I'd be safe as long as I can point the rifle without soiling myself ?

It's a peanut round for black bear...and almost useless on Grizzly.

As been said before. Any deer rifle will work well for black bears. I do prefer my .338 but am hoping to take one with the bow this year. And another with the new .444

Im sure the bear will have realised that you shot him by the time he starts feasting on you.

And why would have FMJ's if your hunting deer ?

Safe ? you mean for the bear ?
