Black Bear Gun

They're wimps. Easy to take down, but they still deserve to be killed as quick as you can. Use enough gun, .270 on up. .45-70's a hoot on bears out to 200 yards, bit more if you handload...

anything in the 30 cal is good Iam not dismissing the smaller cal. I have shot a black bear with a 22 hornet. but I would not make a habit of it.

Iam curious what has taken more game in canada 30 30 or 303? anybody know.

30-30 I'd say. I don't know for sure across the country, but up north here the 30-30 was THE rifle for natives and trappers right up until the mid 80's (at least). Quite popular with us white guys who wanted a reliable, utilitiarian gun as well. The 303 was second, but way back from the 30-30. I sold more Win 94's in 30-30 than all my other center fire rifles combined when I was in retail. Same with 30-30 ammo; we'd bring in all other calibers in amounts of 5-10 boxes per order. The 30-30 stuff I brought in by the case, sometimes as much 30-30 as everything else (centerfire rifle I mean).

...And back to black bears...I've used .270, 308, 338 win mag and 375H&H and honestly - it's shot placement, end of discussion.

I'd hate to be the judge of that beauty contest......:evil::evil::stirthepot2:

Let's face it Gatehouse, the best dang "everything" gun is the .375 ruger! After all it is the King of .375's!!!:D

I like my .350 Rem mag for bears, although my .300 WM has done me well in the past (I may re-bareel the .300 to .375 ruger...).

Do you owe him money or something?

I'd use your 30-30 out to 100yds for sure. Try to get the Hornady 170gr loading, and if that doesn't work go for the Winchester 170gr Silvertips.

My .270 worked well for my friend on this one.....

I have to confess that I was slightly hoping for someone to tell me that every gun I have is woefully inadequte, and that I should be heading down to SIR or Wholesale ASAP. It would just make it easier to convince the wife, "but honey, some guys on the internet said I NEEDED it"

Here's some help....tell her you have to go to SIR to get a "black powder gun for a black bear" and then turn up home with a new rifle..."because they were out of stock"....if she does not beleive you... they do not return cash,,,"only credit"

"their wimps"???!!! actually, i have seen quite a few of them just drop dead but not always the case. my bud and i shot a record book at 75 yards. i say we because it was his hit turn with his 300 win mag, shot 1 it started spinning, i shot my 300RUM (3375fps) it dropped and got up again, he shot it went down after about 4 more steps then on the ground was still trying to get up so i shot it again. that's 2 shots with a 300 win mag and 2 shots with a 300 rem ultra mag. all 4 shots where within an 1" of each other and through the vitals. also, my buddy shot one straight through the heart with a 300 win mag and it ran 150 yards (on video). don't ever under estimate these animals. but, the majority of them will die like a hoofed animal with the right shot just don't be under-cautious. over a barrel i wouldn't be too worried because the shot is going to be well within 50 yards. just make sure you are sure of your shot and be ready when looking for him after giving it about an hour to die.

.308, 7x57,8x57,06 ,.270,45-70 etc work great for bears.
Leave the gopher guns at home. I know they can be used under ideal conditions with precisely placed shots, but ideal conditions don't always show up when you're under gunned.
Use enough gun is an old saying, but still true none the less.:sniper:
