Black Bear Hunt Failure (experience... thank you Rob :) )

I still regret a closing day miss on a nice 5x5 WT on a very doable 200 yd shot one fall. He should be on my wall but I only have his flicking tail in my nightmares. I too was relieved that there was no sign other than a clean miss.

I had spent time working on field shooting positions and was getting better at them and went into a seated position and shot quickly. In hindsight I had more time than I thought and probably could have set up better (again not always an option).

I had a word with myself about planning and taking some extra seconds (if you have them) to get better shots. The next fall I got my black bear at 30-40 yds with my .308 from a position on a stump similar to a bench rest shot. The same fall I then got my moose at about 100-110 using a tree and my 90 degree thumb as a rest.

Sometimes the moment will not afford an ideal or perfect position but I really benefited from a few extra moments (and location planning) to get higher probability shots. I am not saying your shot was high risk or overly difficult, but stay calm and get the shots you want, especially on bears. Sounds like a miss to me, otherwise there would have been a big reaction!

Why is this a failure?
Does one measure success by the kill or the experience of the hunt and the harvest and cut tag?
I would suggest you learned something and a failure it is not.
This might be a case of boar fever and a clean miss and Yogi just got an education.

There is always tomorrow and the only easy day was yesterday.
