If I knew someone to go with I would. I feel that if I observe long enough and use extreme caution I'll be ok. I'll use this info and other info online to make sure I have all the info to recognize a male bear.
Don't feel bad if you shoot a sow, as long as she's alone.
The one I shot last year was a sow. I didn't know it at the time I pulled the trigger, of course. All I knew was I had watched her roam a good 400 yards along a ridge, rolling logs over and sniffing here and there along the way. There wasn't a whole lot of cover and there were no signs of cubs. Also, she wasn't looking behind her or anywhere else - not a care in the world. It was obvious she was alone. Teeth, tongue and gums as green as it gets. Great tasting bear.
