I have questions for those of you who have experience hunting black bear over bait. How close do you sit to your bait? Is it O.K to be on the ground? or is it better to be in a tree stand? What do you do if a sow with cubs comes in while you are hunting?

20-30 yards from bait..
In a tree stand is better.. on the ground will work but you better know which direction the bear will come from as they are silent in the bush and they can get close if they want ...you can crap your pants when you look around and it is 10ft away..LOL
In Alberta a sow with yearlings is legal and I'd kill her.. but one with new borns you can't shoot.

I prefer in a tree stand 15 to 30 yards in deep woods.
I've found that the bears will often scent you sitting on the ground at that distance - especially since during long hours of waiting the wind currents change direction and often swirl about. They end up walking all around you but don't come in. That's happened to me any way.
A ground blind I would set at 60-80 yards. Be sure your shooting lane is good. This is of course for gun hunting. Bow hunters set up kissin close, use all sorts of cover scents, camo magic, and have nerves of steel too - God bless em.

It depends on what you are hunting with at the time. Bow hunters like to be close and I place all my baits 15-20 yards and no father. Height is 18-20 feet high. If your a gun hunter then you can add some distance to the range but its nice to be as close as possible.
Ground hunting can be productive but picking the right bait area is best before the setup. Making sure that you have the pervailing wind blowing in your face most times and setting your ground Blind on a higher spot then the bait works better for the success of bears not winding you. Distance again should be 50-100 yards between the bait and blind...
