Hi JCbruno
Remember the boilogy of the Black Bear
After they wake up from their deep sleep (its not entirely a hybernation state) that they initially hand around swampy areas dominated by skunk cabbage. They eat the tubers of this plant as it is a natural laxative. After a few months of being asleey they develop a dry-clay-like plug in their rectum that helps to prevent dehydration.
Its a real bugger to pass when they wake up. Their gutts are all out of wack. Therefore if you want a spring bear you need to scout out areas that are early to green up. They are starving by this point in time. Desperate for some badly needed calories. these areas are usually valley bottom sites where green up happens early.
This period is coming earlier and earlier every year as a direct result of our retarded temperate situation compounded by global warming.
IMHO this is the best time of the year to get a bear.
You know where they will be
They have not developed the greasy winter fat
they taste better
A nice smoked bear ham from a spring bear is heaven
Hope this helps
Richard
