Black Bear in my yard... (wrong forum maybe...)

So over the last week or two I've been having what I thought was a bear coming into my yard and getting into stuff. Left some jugs of oil outside over night to cool after having them in the turkey fryer, and they disappeared, then a few nights later had my bird feeder get trashed.

Wasn't sure if it was a bear, as I've had coons do this before, (with the feeder.)

Set up the game camera up last night and tonight, and sure enough....

So I guess I'm going to have to police up all my stuff that he might get into. Bait buckets in my boat, etc.... And not put any bird feed out for a bit and hopefully he'll move on. If not i'll have to call MNR I guesss...

Cool pics though. Wife and I were watching him from our window like 10-15 feet away. Didn't even care that the camera was flashing in his face.
 
Why call the MNR?? Bear season is a couple weeks away!! Not sure what zone deep river is in, but the season starts either Aug 15 or Sept 1. Git er done!

Good idea to put away the attractants as things tend not to work out too well for the bear after he becomes habituated to this stuff.
 
You're in the right forum if you post a new series of pictures with him as a rug. I'm pretty excited about getting out for bear this fall. I may have to drive farther than my back porch though.
 
Nice looking bear! I'd go buy a tag if I were you :D. Bear meat is one of my favourites. Like you already said, police up all the food around your house & he will leave.

Had one break into the cabin, it went straight for a deep fryer we had on the kitchen counter. It knocked it over and proceeded to lick the oil off everything. I left the greasy paw prints on the door as a reminder.
Prior to that, this bear had broken into my workshop where it consumed a whack of mouse poison. It must have had a sour stomach and I'd bet the oil helped it out.
So the lesson here is they have an amazing nose and once they figure out how to get into buildings they can be relentless in their pursuit to get in if they smell something good. This one came back a couple of times in the wee hours and was scraping at the door. I had boarded it up after the first break-in. We "scared" it off with pots and pans and barking noises, but the door is all scratched up.
 
It's all bush for km's behind my house. There is also a grass run way back there where I saw him last night when I was out with my dog. he was crossing the run way traveling in the direction of my house, and bam that's where I saw him an hour later! I might go way back there and try and bait him out there, and get a tag and wait for Sept 1! :D

To add to that, I wouldn't want to shoot him in my yard, as I'm close to the highway, and there is a subdivision across the road. Either someone would call the cops at the sound of a gun shot, or if I hit him with my bow I wouldn't want him to run out into a neighbours yard, or the highway. So I think I'll hike back into the bush a km or so and maybe try baiting him there. Plus it'll keep him away from other houses.
 
The MNR in Ontario have said call the OPP and not them.

Yea, I'll get right on that.

Just like when I called the local PD (less then 10km away) when my cars got ransacked, and they forwarded it to the OPP highway division because I was outside of the local PD's jurisdiction. So when the detective from the OPP called me, he ID'd himself as being in the Quinte West Division. I asked him to repeat that, and I asked him where exactly he was, he said Belleville (or Trenton, can't remebmer which)

Either way they're like roughly 300km away! I laughed an asked him exactly what they were going to do for me, and he bluntly told me nothing, unless they get more reports of break ins. I found that funny.

Anyways, I don't hate on the cops at all. I'll just wait and get a tag and try and bait him away from all the houses and highway here.

Now to find a butcher... :D
 
In Alberta a land owner can shoot a black bear on private property at any time of year with no license. I assume Ontario isn't quite so "liberal"? ;)

They are usually only a nuisance if the property owner has left something out to attract them. If there is nothing there, they won't hang around.
The responsibility is on the landowner I would think they would say.
In the experience I encountered, I would have not had any problem shooting the bear if it had been able to open the door while we were in the cabin.
Unless you want to clean up a dead bear mess I would think killing it would be a final resort. The bears who do become nuisances should be shot, especially after multiple calls and reports to the MNR, and usually are, by someone.
In my case, I called the mnr and they came out and took a walk around the property with a shotgun, ready to dispatch.
