I want to doa backpack archery trip for 4 days into the mountains here in BC. It's black bear country. Is a single shot 12 ga. with slugs enough to keep in my tent at night or do I need claymores etc. I am talking about a clean camp etc. The shotty is just for snoopers that might come to the tent back in the high country in August. Thanks!

Shotty good. Buckshot better for tent snoopers when you're groggy and being awoken by the rough tongue of Boo Boo.

Your single shot with slugs is okay. A repeater is better, but if it's what you have, a single 12 guage slug is pretty good. Shot is for birds however, and not bears, as some suggest.
At "tent snooping" range, buckshot is more than adequate. But use slugs if that's what fills your boots. Christ, a pointy stick has deterred more than a few bear attacks.
And damn. Yet another bear defence thread. According to the posters you can use everything from an Airsoft rifle to a thermonuclear warhead. Pick your poison and if the lightning strikes and a bear attacks you let us know how it turns out.
My charging bear was stopped by a .280 Rem at 20 yds. I would have loved to have had a shotgun with 00 buck instead of a scoped rifle.
Ya another bear thread. The black bears killled a dog just across the street from me in mid afternoon and another one up the mountain was mauled. Damn bears are crazy sometimes and south Vancouver Island is crawling with them. I was considering motion controlled gattling guns but the cost was running up and want to get away with a single shot (and spray of course for seasoning)

I agree with this. Makes perfect sense to me.
You should drag a dead fish behind you all day as you hike, and carry a bag of fried bacon on your belt which you should strew around and inside your tent at night.

That and a cast iron pot and a hammer .... Something goes growl in the night, grab the pot and start banging it with the hammer, 99% of the times the bear will be gone faster than you can blink. IF you get a stubborn one, a slug to the chest will to the trick, but then you'll have a whole lot of splainin' to do with MNR.
Not out this way. We don't even have to report a black bear shot on private/leased land.

Be sure you have a bear license. If you were carrying a shotgun with a slug during an archery hunt for moose or deer in Ontario without a license for bear, you'd be getting a charge.

As long as he keeps the shotgun cased when actively hunting, and only brings it out at night in his tent there is no issue! You can carry whatever you want whenever you want as long as you are not hunting! I've talked to several CO's and it doesn't make a difference if your shooting a .22 or a 50 bmg as long as its clear you aren't hunting! Anytime of the year anywhere! Stop spreading this B.S. About having to have a proper license and tag, and be in the right season! If it is clear you are not hunting then none of this applies.
