Black bear question

Are these BC bears with worms feeding on fish a lot? I have never seen many worms in bears I have gut in Ontario.

In fact I preferr bear meat over venison and moose meat as well.

Nearest dump is 37km as the crow flies to where I hunt. Chance I guess but doesn't bother me
It's hard to say, but very possible. There are lot's of lakes, streams, creeks, river's, etc. for them to find spawning fish of some kind.

Even Osoyoos Lake in the Okanagan have a salmon run again in the lake.

Don’t listen to the hater’s, I was in the same position a few years back. Tried to find someone I knew that could give me
A bit of bear meat to try before I committed and shot one, no such luck.

My one buddy that had tired some from others said that one guys bear sausage was disgusting and the second was great, we ended up splitting a fall bear we came across while deer hunting. Was amazing, I made sausages out of most of it but kept some backstrap for medalions and schnitzel. Ribs were the best I’ve ever had, even better than bbq pork ribs.

Just go for it, bear meat is phenomenal if you get one that hasn’t been eating salmon or raiding the dump for pampers lol. Go find one out in the bush that’s been eating grass and berries and you’ll be amazed by how tasty it is, my only complaint is you have to cook it medium/well. You can’t cook it rare like deer or beef due to the risk of trichinosis, the next bear I shoot I’ll brine and smoke some hams and make sausages and ground from the rest. Ground bear meat is dynamite for tacos etc.

I guess hunting is like politics, three hunters means five contrary opinions :)

I have a buddy here that may be interested in splittinng one. He likes spring bear, so maybe we'll do that on a tag.

fantastic to eat ,taken care of properly just like any game animal ,then cooked right u would think u were eating finest beef roast .
The ole analogy of what truck is best, what gun is best, what calibre is best what game animal is best and the Best Of lists goes on.
One bad experience or just plain ole opinion will garner many different opines.
By the way, I like Fords (yesterday) Subaru and Toyota today, Browning A-bolts and do not own one today , but have a 6.5CM and a 7x57 in the locker.
I shoot and eat ducks from Bald Plate to Teal and Geese as well and yes I am certain some of the honkers have comes from Stanley Park in Vancouver...as for wild game I like it all and even have ate Bobcat too.
I would turn my nose at coyote regardless if has dined the finest of finest scraps from the top end restaurant on Hollywood Drive California.
Take it for what it is someones opinion.

I was in a hunting camp of 8 fellows and I killed a mature 6x6 bull elk, another hunter killed a bear the same day. The next day a Chef that was in camp open fire BBQed the tenderloin from my elk and a haunch from the bear...at the end of the meal with everyone full up there was still elk tenderloin on the grill but the bear was cleaned up
 
Waterfowl hunters can be the worst.

Duck shot at 6 AM. Brings it home as is. Gives to neighbor at six PM, as is.
Lots of people hang birds - guts in even - for days at a time to dry age them. Birds being much smaller/lighter animals don't retain heat like big game animals.

The current Authoritative Source on All Things Meat is Englishman Hugh Fearnley-Whittingstall, who in his The River Cottage Meat Book says “four or five days would be about right for me” if a bird is hung at 55°F.

Can’t be overstated how important game handling and processing is. A little care goes a long way.
Lol, I always laugh at the guys that complain about gamey or bad tasting meat. Same guys probably don’t remove the hide or cool the carcass down a soon as possible, just toss it in the back of the truck and drive around all day with it.

But bouncing it around the box of the truck for hours on end is how you tenderize it! Lol
 
Bear isn't my favourite, mainly because I (like others above) like my steaks and roasts rare. It's still great when ground up for burgers, chili, etc.

Shoot your bear, split it with your buddy, try it out. If you really find you don't like it...and I doubt that will happen :)...surely one or both of you has a dog that would appreciate the meat?

The other thing to keep in mind is that lots of folks want to shoot the biggest buck or bull or boar they can, which is great if you are motivated by the desire for a nice rack or skull or tanned hide...but those old males tend to be the toughest and least appetizing members of their species. It's not that they can't be turned into great meals, but a meat grinder is definitely your friend. But if you really want to give bear meat a fair shake as table fare, shoot a smaller and younger bear. Good luck!

I hunt the interior of BC for Black bears, probably shot 30 something that i consumed myself and never once did i see worms as described. I guess the pioneers in the days must have been wrong, as Blackbear was their preferred game to eat.
