Black Bear - tough as stink!

Nice pic, good story, and don't let FB bother you. From what I understand it draws the mentally deficient like honey draws flies.;)

Man, you guys are using too much gun!;)

I shot 2 with a .270 (130 gr), one moved about 2 feet and the other was a bang-flop.



Cool story though, I can't believe it moved after being shot with that cannon? Maybe there is something to that hydrostatic shock theory? Good job too, you probably did save a kid from a mauling.

Bullet choice has a lot to do with it.

This is my first spring bear, got him this morning, about 30 meters distance, 12 gauge led slug between his eyes. He went down. About 30 seconds later, he gets up and started walking away. Can someone explain me WTF?? The lights should went out!! Took two more shots in the chest to put him to sleep.

I would almost think the slug entered at an angle where it did not connect with the brain and simply passed through a non-vital zone. My grandfather always told me a bear has a hollow spot located at the top of the snout and between the eyes that if hit at he wrong angle will not put the bear down as the bullet misses the brain? But never having killed a bear I cannot verify that. Your shot would appear to be in that zone?

Depends on the shot angle (were you above?) but I think the "between the eyes" effect you would find on a person, is more "between the ears" when dealing with a bear. You'll know when you dress it, you'll probably find the slug had dug a channel clean underneath the bullseye. Still a great trophy though, congrats on that!

You shot through the sinus cavity... the shock of the slug through bone put him down, but he recovered and was exiting... it was a poor decision to take a head shot... you should always do your best to put the slug through the lungs... study bear anatomy and learn how to place your shot... if you had not finished that bear, you would likely not have recovered it and it would have suffered a protracted death... possibly starving, being unable to forage properly.

Congrats on getting the job done though.

From shooting the odd bear over the years, I have observed that almost no two bears react the exact same to being shot, although they seldom seem to go right now. Lots of life in those suckers.
 
The DGX is still a pretty tough bullet. Maybe something softer (and cheaper) for breaking rocks and the occasional black bear dummying would work better.

If you skin out a bear skull, you will find the brain is pretty darn small, and it looks to me like your shot went forward of the brain cavity. That would have given that bear one helluva headache, but he might have recovered from that.
 
Bears can be unpredictable , no doubt about it . A little off topic , but I am curious about the camp . Is this a camp that you own and rent out , or is it govt. owned.....and why would a snowmobliler shoot the window out from the inside....sounds like an interesting story ?
